Lightning (gets its) Stripes.

The scene is the evening of June 05 1944, somewhere in Norfolk.
The go ahead for Operation Overlord has been given and a mixed crew of RAF and USAAF ground crew are hard at work applying the invasion stripes to a P-38J Lightning ready for it to provide air supportaction the following day.

As with any job carried out in a hurry things do not always run to plan.

A young WAAF (possibly my mother!) from the stores depot is keeping the paperwork in order whilst being chatted up by the USAAF sergent.

The diorama uses the Academy 1/72 P-38J Lightning 'European Theater' (12405) and an Academy 1/72 US 2.5 ton Cargo Truck (13402), along with an assortement of Airfix RAF and USAAF ground crew figures supplemented with some Revell RAF ground crew.

Great work! Nice idea for a dio. Did your mom serve in the WAAF? Pretty cool.

This is a wonderful diorama. The tiny size of those figures... it's just amazing.

Thanks for all the positive comments - glad you liked it.
I am reasonably satisfied with it, although as usual the figures could have been better, but I think I am slowly getting towards where I would like to be in that area.
I reckon if I keep at it with these 1/76 figures long enough I might eventually make it  At least a bit of intentional paint splashing helps disguise some of the worst errors.
Still a long way to go to get anywhere close to some of the masters on here of that particular black art.

Brilliant, Ian ... including the figures. A very well thought out diorama showing the invaluable work of those who wouldn't necessarily be fighting. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

This is an excellently executed diorama of an interesting subject - well done! Don't sell yourself short on the figures either, they are pretty good already!
Best wishes,
Piers

Just had a look at this. I love it. The bloke covered in paint who dropped his bucket is my favourite! Bravo.
