Okay, as intimated elsewhere I will be constructing a Sunderland as Black Peter of 230 Sqn.

The obliglatory pre-assembly shots:

That will look awesome when it's done. One of my favourite Airfix kits from way back this one, built it many times. Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Oh wow!

I like flying boats!

For me, the Airfix Sunderland is one of those 'must build' kits.....I shall be following this build with great interest!

All the best

I  found the mould date during this last stint, 1960. She don't look too bad for a kit that's nearly 50 years old!

On with the update:

Floats, flying controls, main beaching gear legs, horizontal and vertical stabilizers built.

The kit propeller spinners are just too big!

I sourced replacements from the spares box. These came from Italeri/MPM late mark Wellingtons, which because of the sprue layouts include everything to make up Pegasuses for a Mk I.

I'm going to use the kit engines. In order to mate the new props to them I've inverted the pins, drilled a hole in the base and secured them to the bck of the propellers.

As you can see it's quite effective!

Then the wings were constructed......

.....and the hull had the portholes glazed. These were then painted black on the inside to negate painting the whole of the hull interior.

The Sunderland...she's an elegant old beast, isn't she?

Is there an aftermarket source for the props.....Having to buy two Wellingtons is just not on the radar for me!

TIA & All the best

Yes, I have aeroclub props, engines, cowlings, exhausts, and guns for mine.

It's a case of raiding the stash Sarge. I had two left over from my Wimpey II conversion, and I knew I had an MPM Mk III lurking. But as Brews said Aeroclub are good. I used their Pegasus on my Bombay.

A lengthy update in some ways.

The weekend was used to do little things like painting....

...building the turrets,

.....and adding a bit of detail to the cockpit.

This week has seen biggest piece of construction completed:

A close-up of the remedial work carried out of the upper hull.

As can be seen the dorsal turret position has been filled, and the radio mast and DF loop fairing have been correctly off-set.

The hole on the centreline forward of the DF loop is where the astrodome is to be located.

Why this has not been included is a mystery to me now, as I have yet to see a photo of a Sunderland without one.

Got a little carried away.

Put on the wings and floats, then thought I'll just paint the rudder to see what the Revell #9 Anthracite looks like.......

Looking at the lower shot you can just make out the intakes added to the underside of the Pegasuses (or is that Pegasi?)

Excellent job!  Looks really cool in (nearly) black doesn't it?

You've put me to shame - my Sunderland for the Heavy Bomber GB is still sitting waiting for me to pull my finger out!

It looks great! I've used Revell #9 for my last two Bomber Command builds (Lanc and Mossie), plus my 100 Group Mossie and I think it gives a much better effect than using a true black. I don't usually take too much heed of the scale effect theory but this is one instance where it seems to work.

One problem I found with brushing the Revell paint is that it goes off very quickly which makes getting a good smooth contiguous coat difficult, but I will be spraying it in the future.

Markings added and floats rigged:

Kit roundels on wings with the centres overpainted in Revell #50 Gloss Light Blue.

The others came from various Modeldecal sheets I have. To have uniformity in markings the blue on the SEAC markings were also overpainted.

Next comes the trials and tribulations of......
