1953 'Dambuster' Lancaster

I was going to build this aircraft in the 'Aircraft of the Silver screen'
but i think i will build it on the 3rd Anniversary of the group.
Not a straight forward build as you might think ....

I know the Dambuster film was done in '54 but the aircraft was 'issued' from storage in 1953 for the Mayflower film, 'Appointment in London' so to me its the 1953 Lancaster.
Off the cuff, mods that need doing ...

FN82 rear gun turret

Treaded main wheels

Reference book for this build is 'Filming the Dambusters' 2005.
Of the bits required i am unable to source the treaded main wheels locally so i will have to go direct to Canada.
Thought i had an old Revell Dambuster to rob for the modified bomb-bay but may have to go to Balsa ...

I have the Aeroclub paddle props, some exhaust stubbs, an old Revell turret to convert to the FN82 and also set of rudders that i think i will be able to modify to the Lincoln style.
Will not bother with a photo of the kit as i'm sure everybody is familar will the Airfix Lancaster anyway ....

LL, you might be able to get the treaded wheels from Aeroclub, their Shackleton MR.2 conversion has them and they do sell items from their sets separately, just write Peter Wright an email.

Plus you could probably get the forward and rear bomb bay fairings from Paragon, I had asked Neil if I could just buy them for a project I'm doing and I was able to. They're actually for the Grand Slam conversion he does but they're very similar. You can get in touch with Neil on Britmodelller as he frequents there a lot, his sign in name is -- Neil, actually you can get in touch with John Adams (owner of Aeroclub) over there too, think his sign in name is johnaero.

I have made a start ...
Cut the bottom section off the rudders with a view to extending into Lincoln type.
Going with the kit modified bomb-bay but have filled the section with plasti-card before applying filler to re-shape.
Watched the film last nite and the rear end of the bomb-bay fairing is right upto the front section, it does not have the inner recess as per kit, so i can either cut the kit bomb-bay or leave it and build the 'new' bouncing bomb into it ??

I have also enquired at Aeroclub and although they don't have the treaded wheels in at the mo, they will be available in a few weeks so that will be good ...

Well ...i got myself into gear and made another start on this 'kite'
Thanks to KINGNUT617 for the link but i thought i would try and have a bash at the rudders/fins to improve on my limited modelling skills.
Photographic update:
Lincoln style rudder + fins - 60 thou piece superglued and left to dry. These were measured for the new length of 'trim-tab' and the existing tab cut away. When dry the fins will be filed to shape and then 10 thou(?) tabs fitted to both.

Sub-assemblies:
Fuselage interior painted around the cockpit area, i shall put in the 'navigators' table and bench seat and i have yet to cut out the OVAL window beneath the b/a 's position. I have also scraped off all the fuselage windows on this later Mk. of Lancaster.
Thought i would cut out the two top hatches for a change

Engines all assembled and waiting to dry before filling and sanding ALL of them along the top cowling covers; metals paddle-bladed props to hand ...

I need a little help with this .....

an old Frog(?) canopy with no raised lines and from years ago i must have used, i think, permanant marker pen to draw some lines on it.

Problem: how can i remove these lines without 'dis-colouring' the canopy ??

Preparing the under bomb-aimer position for the oval window, had to be careful not to get to close to the hatch ...

I have also rubbed down the original ASI positions on both sides of the nose.

Permanent marker does come off.
Unfortunately i can't remember which solvent i used on another canopy, we have big bottles of stuff at school for when permanent pens are used on dry-wipe boards.

I reckon start with an alcohol based one and work your way up - practice with a permanent pen on a piece of scrap clear plastic.

PS i used a little bleach on the marker ink and its come off, did i get lucky ?
