It's now mid-December, so presuming it is alright to begin polling, I am putting forward the idea of a 1/24 Luftwaffe GB. As was suggested by RG, we could do a 1/24 Fw.190 GB but why not say 1/24 Luftwaffe GB so the 1/24 Airfix Stuka and Me109 kits can be included.

So, whadaya think?

The Poll will run for 30 Days.

Not my scale, but if other people want to have a crack at it, all the best to them!

You're jumping the gun a bit, 12th December is not mid-December and polling resumes on 15th.

I plan to build my 1:24 Bf 109 some time next year, but I certainly don't want it to be a rush job in a couple of months
I'm thinking slow but sure here

I may be getting the 1/24 109 off the grandparents, so, yeah why not?

I was thinking, (if this GB were to be given the green light) perhaps the length of this GB could be longer than a normal one due to the size and complexity of the kits involved

Perhaps a way of getting more people involved would be to re-title it a 'Battle of Britain' GB
Long build period
Any scale
Any Airfix subject (which flew between June & November 1940)
People could also build more than one subject if this was ongoing over several months and still get involved with the normal GB's

just a thought

Actually, that's not a bad idea! I would finally get the chance to build lots of those kits I've got for the BoB Project, and give me an excuse to buy more

But what does Dave think?

However, wouldn't an "Any scale, any subject just so long as it's BoB related" somewhat defeat the object of a group build?

i.e. you could end up with 10 participants all building different things in different scales so there is no shared experience or chance to bounce problems/ideas off each other.

I guess the GB could become a 1/24 GB. Any Airfix 1/24 scale kit could be built?

That could be a better idea - I'm sure that techniques for building such large scale models are going to be similar regardless of subject.

I understand what you are saying but even by building different models we can be still be sharing the experience of building together. After all, lot of problems we encounter are common to all builds. I would rather have ten people making ten different things together than no build at all. On a site like ARC, which is dedicated to aircraft with 7,000 members getting enough people to participate in specific GBs is not normally an issue. ATF is different as we have a small membership and if we stuck to builds of specific kits all of the time then there will be less participation of members in a common build. That is why we have four types of Group Build (five if you include the ATF Diorama Joint Build).

In the case of a proposed 1/24 scale GB, it looks very much like there could be too few members having 1/24 aircraft for a GB of a specific kit or even a Luftwaffe or BoB GB. I think it should just be a 1/24 GB for all Airfix aircraft.

If it is to be a 1/24 Scale Airfix Aircraft GB, should I make a new thread as some people may have already voted, but might wish to change their minds now the spectrum has widened slightly?

Yes, there should be a new thread as there does appear to be interest in a general Airfix 1/24 aircraft GB. The Luftwaffe 1/24 GB is to all intents and purposes a non-starter and you should do another poll on it in six months time.

Just read this and 6 months past - the quickest 1/24 I've built required about 6-8 weeks.... and that was just about every night for a few hours at least due to a cold European winter. Motivation to build and finish these needs to be high - so a good balance of patience and motiviation is required, not to mention some advanced skills to correct certain kit problems.

I'd say if you do get number to go ahead with this - start at the onset of winter and go for a 3 month period. I'd still be keen as I still have 3 unmade kits but doing a 'German only' or 'B.O.B; only would be too restrictive as Dave says. Bear in mind there are also no aftermarket parts of Airfix kits in this scale - so you'll need to make or mould your own. Fortunately conversions aren't too difficult and I have various 'upgrade' parts for some. Personally, I think it could go into a more generic category or theme- like Ratch building his 1/24 109 in the ATF anniversary build or allowing someone (if they wish) to choose doing a 1/24 Harrier for the Falklands GB?

Cheers
