Airfix 1/48 Supermarine Seafire FR.46/FR.47 (A06103) In Box Review

ATF Build Review Airfix 1/48 Seafire FR.46/FR.47 (A06103) link

Hi Folks

A rare treat for me, thank you to Airfix and Ratch for providing the kit. The Seafire isn't an aircraft I know a great deal about so the FR.46/FR.47 designation was a bit of a mystery at first but the instruction notes explain the the FR.46 is the naval version of the more familiar Mk 22 and the FR.47 the naval version of the Mk 24. Both were powered by the Rolls Royce Griffon engine driving two contra rotating three bladed propellers and could carry reconnaissance cameras. Weapons for each were two Hispano 20mm cannons in each wing and eight 60lb rockets or up to 1,500lb of bombs. The main difference between the two types is that the 46 had a standard wing, the 47 had a folding wing.

Box art is by Adam Tooby and is up to his usual excellent standard.
Image

Two schemes are offered, one for each type
Image

The box is a bit bigger than it needs to be but everything is well packed
Image

Instructions are of the usual type and seem to be straight forward. I'll post pdfs in the instruction area later.

The paint schemes are in within the instructions and are in colour

There are three sprues in the usual grey plastic and one clear sprue in a separate bag. Panel lines are nicely recessed with no flash. Separate wings are provided for each type as are front canopies. As can be seen from the sprues a five bladed propeller is included which suggests some sprue sharing with another mark.

Wheel wells are detailed on both wings

Cockpit has some detail

As PaveShadow pointed out this kit is from 1996
Image

Two windscreens are offered

Decals look to be in good register and dense, no indication who they are made by though.
Image
Decals are thoughtfully in pieces to fit around undercarriage doors. The Black and White markings are specific to a July 1950 FR 47 aircraft and should be omitted for an earlier example.

This looks to be a very nice kit, a build review will follow shortly!

Colin

Looks good Colin. Incidentally, it's actually a re-release of 07106, hence the 1996 date. Looking forward to the build review :thumb:

Is there no (very small) Cartograf logo on the outer card carton/box - typically they generally seem to put it near the scan code on the newer boxes

Hi James

Thank you for the info. Looks like in my excitement I have misread 'New for 2012' as 'New Tool for 2012'. I'm not sure much will be gained by me doing a build review of a 16 year old kit?

Colin

Think you might be surprised Colin - it came out when I'd pretty much stopped modelling, and hasn't been the easiest to acquire since, so I've never actually seen a build review for this one. I'm certainly tempted to get one by what I see in your inbox review.
James

This is one of THE best Airfix kits , its up there with the Lightning kits.
IIRC it shares bits with the F22 /24 tooling hence the five blade prop.
I have the original and still not got round to building it ....shame on me !
Ive built the F22 /24 kit and it was a dream !
You will love building it Colin.....go on ....you know you want to

Thanks Chris, I hadn't noticed before, a very useful tip.

Forgot to mention kit comes with 2 Flying Hours and is listed at £18.99 on airfix.com
