Hey fellas,

I've been looking all over the place but I don't seem to be able to locate A B-17 Flying Fortress made by Airfix, in any scale. Do they even make one? Tried the Revell brand and was very happy with that but really wanted to see what Airfix had. Already looked for an answer on this site but have failed to find it.

Thanks, Phil

Thank Rich.  I'll check ebay and see if anyone has an old one to sell.

If you're looking at the most recent Airfix issue you could just as well get one of the Academy B-17G kits - you shouldn't find it difficult finding one and it's the same set of mouldings.

Have recently seen some colour footage of the real aircraft depicted by the Airfix issue of 'Bit of Lace'.
It showed that it had carried out 42 mission, does anybody know about this aircraft to give a date to the footage ??
Believe it flew from Rattlesden

'Lace' was operational from July '44 until the end of the war. She flew 83 ops so you might guess that any footage showing the aircraft with about 40 ops would be late '44 to early '45. There's a short history of 'Lace' here.

I reckon this footage must have been filmed around November 1944 as the other special aircraft seen around the 5 minutes mark was one of 'mine'

Interesting to see the ball turret replaced with a bombing radar on serial 297936 at approx. 12mins on that clip too

Why were the outer tyre walls of that Lanc white?

Can 'Miss Lace' be built OOTB with the Revell B-17G or would surgery be required to move the waist guns? Can she be built OOTB(ish) from any modern(ish) kit? Are good aftermarket decals available for her?

I'm already talking myself into this aren't I? :Whistling:

All the best

A Bit o Lace had the waist guns directly opposite each other and the Cheyenne tail turret, so the Revell kit is ideal. The original Airfix tooling was incorrect in this respect, but the combination of waist gun turret and Cheyenne tail was unusual and it would be easy to assume that a machine with the Cheyenne tail had the staggered waist guns. Hasegawa made the same mistake when offering Lace as an option with their 'G' kit.

Think its a combination of natural light and the cine film, further in the clip they are not noticeable as being white . . .

But if you want white walled tyres on your Lanc then you can have them. I bet it would look really smart.

Yes, you need Lifelike decal set 72014.

Probably an academic point now, but I got a 1989 Airfix 1/72 B-17G "A Bit O'Lace" (kit no. 5005) on E-Bay. I got involved in, and lost, several bidding wars before I secured one. I paid £15.00 excluding postage if memory serves. However, be prepared. The kit, whilst a classic (with that awesome box art), is not up to the current standards. If you put it alongside the more modern offerings from Academy and Revell it doesn't match up well. I am doing it a bit at a time, as there is a lot of tidying up, filling, and sanding to do!

Also the bulkheads in front of and behind the cockpit are too wide, so the halves won't glue together unless sanded down.
