Airfix 1/72 Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1

Image

This is the latest issue from Airfix, a new tooling for this unique aircraft. The Harrier was the first successful V/STOL combat aircraft to enter RAF service. Development saw the aircraft evolve into a capable combat aircraft.
There are four runners moulded in the familiar light grey plastic, and one runner with clear parts making a total of 89 components. Detail is fine and good quality.

Assembly is shown in 45 exploded diagrams with options for in-flight and grounded poses with appropriate air vents, stabilizers and air brakes. The canopy may be fixed in the open or closed positions.

At first glance, this looks very nice indeed; can hardly wait to get my hands on a squadron or two.

Thanks for the review.

Looks a fantastic kit and one I'll be getting sometime in the future.

With a veiw to world sales, I'm surprised an AV8A option isn't included as it was with the 1:24 release all them years ago.

Could be that its too far removed from a GR1

Not at all. The old Hasegawa 1/72 kit and the Airfix 1/24 super kit offered both. I think Airfix have invested heavily with the GR1 and GR3 as RAF subjects and didn't see any particular advantage in offering the AV8. Maybe they will release an AV8 at some stage, but my guess is they will be happy to let aftermarket decals cater for those who want an AV8. The only significant variation on the airframe is the large spine mounted aerial on AV8's and anybody with some plastic card could knock one up in about 30 seconds. Maybe a minute.

For a more representative AV-8A you'd need the stencil seat, aerial fit and some US centric stores, which no doubt may have then pushed the kit into Series 4 territory.

Interesting way they've molded the nozzles so that there is no central join in the "slats" as in the previous kits. That was always a bit of a bugbear to eliminate :thumb: .

looks pretty good. Would make a lovely little diorama with some of the ex-JB stuff scattered around.

Looks great. I'll be looking to get my hands on one. I'm guessing the GR3 might have a lot of the same parts.

You will get all the GR1 sprues plus these extra sprues with additional bits:

Like the look of the sidewinder rails/pylons in one piece.

Also of note is the fact the second aerial behind the canopy, the refuelling probe, centre pylon and the later British/Spanish RWR on the fin and tail are only included in the GR.3 kit. This will have some bearing on the aftermarket decal schemes (as well as builds) I suspect.

Great kit though :thumb:
