As there is plenty of time to build a kit especially for the show does anyone have some suggestions of what they would like to contribute?

Are there any key landmarks that we should try to include?

I know when we were organising the 50th for the Humbrol stand we tried to get a model made for every year, but then the stand was over 20 feet long and still ended up with gaps in years. Perhaps a different angle, maybe just examples of the "all time greats" and some other display material like Airfix Magazine, old catalogues etc... scattered around a history of the brand?

Ayup All...

Firstly, why not have a poll to decide THE FORUMS most iconic 20 to 25 Airfix kits, and have them on display with why and (hopefully with a BIG ask) a semi-poster sized picture of the Artwork... but officially supplied by Airfix, because after all, we're promoting them and they'll be expensive-ish...

Or a display with models to say WHY Airfix is so Important to us as individuals...

Or general Airfix merchandise with Advertising and titled... 'Airfix Past and present' and 'Then and now' showing Airfixes journey from 'Merely' Airfix models to Wallace and Gromit and Dr Who...

Ayup All...

Then we could have a journey through each scale, the giftsets, dogfight doubles, a display on how Airfixes can be modified a la Alan Hall...

We could have the Pontoon Bridge set, Stalingrad, jungle outpost, (My fave) Gun Emplacement, Napoleonics, figures, etc, etc...

I think a workable solution would be to do it by decade. One kit of each genre for each of the six decades (where available). That way we get a nice broad range of model types, hopefully so everyone will be able to build something they like.

If we run it left to right across the display, we can back it up by the members manning the stall dressing up to represent their decade - how do you look in a mini-skirt  Fea

Ooo-er! Steady on, I don't think we're like the WEM boys dressing up in Sailor's Flares!

I like the idea of decades and asking the general forum what are there favourite Airfix kits. Perhaps a list of the "ATF's 20 favourite Airfix Kits of the last 60 years" could feature?

I think we need to be careful that the SIG doesn't focus too heavily on Aircraft, Airfix is much more than that so we need to make sure that all genres are represented. Perhaps not equally, as aircraft are most popular but we need to document all angles of Airfix.

What about a small mini-display with examples of all Airfix box types showing the evolution in design over the years?

I like the idea of the members nominating (and making!) a model that defines "Airfix" for them, maybe with a bit of blurb about why.

Ayup Rich...

Sorry mate, i'm an Eighties boy. and my Don Johnson Jacket doesn't fit anymore. by then, girls and Bikes were my love. I was ten in 1975, but my flares are long, long gone...

Owen, i don't think a display of Airfix Boxing is quite a good idea. It's a recipe for temptation and thievery ! unless you wanna sit on the stand 24/7 and have to growl at people... ! (I'm not kidding, either...)

Here's a table showing the main 9 genre's of kits. In theory 6 decades with 9 categories means 54 models. In practice not all genre's featured in all decades and the 90's    goodness knows what was going on there!

Perhaps running along the front of the table we could print a history timeline of the Airfix's achievements with scanned box arts showing the different styles and logo's?

Having everyone choose a favourite kit and explain why it's special to them is a good idea. I'm not sure how well it would work on a SMW display, with lots of visitors, will people stop to take the time to read the text with the models? Would this be better suited to a forum based activity, possibly the kits and explanations being dipslayed in a SIG calendar available to members? We might even be able to persuade the club mag to feature some as articles.

As with other Shows, the display will depend on what members are willing to send/bring to the table

I'll happily drag anything out of my stash for SMW, however my stash is limited to 1/72 Aircraft and launches and 1/600 ships.

Just out of curiosity where would we stand with regards to aftermarket parts?
I ask because, for example, some of the 1/600 ships look a little bare until you add some WEM etch. It's not so bad for older aircraft boxings with little cockpit detail as that can be hidden by a pilot figure and people might not be able to get close enough to have a decent look in detail anyway.

Just food for thought.

Ayup Paul...

I don't think it will be an issue at all... although it's usually mentioned on the description that accompanies the model. I.E.  Airfix 1/600 xyz.. with Wem Pe set blah blah...

Thanks, I though that would be the case.

So long as the base kit is Airfix - not a problem, conversions, aftermarket, scratchbuilt parts - all wecome.

Only kit I could contribute would be my Henschel HS123 or my Defiant; none of my other efforts are anywhere near good enough for a display.

Just to add, I'd be happy to build any aircraft gaps, but as many of you know, I'm average on here at best!

Ayup George...

If you're kind enough to build for display, and to bring it,or send it, then there's no reason not to display it. it's not about 'Competition Quality' building (! i'm not even 'there' wherever there is, myself !), it's about the subject and the builders love of it.

Believe me, there are a LOT of those 'Fabulous' models out there on display that are seriously overdone !

Display and enjoy... It's a real buzz when you do.

How about this

I have an Airfix slot racing set from the 60's.

Do you think it would be a bit of a crowd puller if I got it working and we set it up at the end of a table for people to play with?
