Im going to do the early Airfix Concorde.
(BAC)
Here's the other boxing (which I don't have).
(Thanks to The Flying Winger)
I'm not using the Airfix BOAC decals, instead I'll use the set of Prototype decals made by F-DCAL which I got from Telford in 2007. I did get both the British and French versions as I do have two of these old kits. But I'll be using G-BSST for this GB.
Here's the kit...
Not much to it really. Fuselage, wings, engines and wheels! There wern't any instructions with this particular kit so I can either dig out my other one -if I can find it- or just bung it together.
Hopefully when it's all done it might look a bit like this....
I'll use this site too.

It will be interesting to compare the prototype with the commercial version, the nose/windscreen arrangement particularly.

Here's a comparison between the Airfix prototype (cream coloured), Airfix production (grey) and also the Revell (white) kit.

That's very interesting Brian, I had a walk through it when I visited Yeovilton a few years ago.
Maybe this photo will help, it's of one of the prototypes. It would seem to show the wing's leading edge was a bit more curved than what the kit has it:

Hi Ratch,
I got the photo from my friend James (jamatari) and I've no idea where it originated from or who to credit, sorry. I've not even been able to find anything like it on the internet.

I have found another which has to have been taken on the exact same day but from a different angle (almost directly behind) which was taken by someone working with BBC-News. It is possible the photo I've posted above is from the same source but I can't say for sure. There might have been other photographers there at the time but what the occasion is I don't know either so can't double check.

Hi,
Yeah, I havn't forgotton but I've been rammed with other jobs and things on the go at the mo.
How long have I got?
Once I get started it will only take a few days. This is one I really want to do. When is the last time anyone saw the original Airfix Concorde built?

Plenty of time Brian, GB runs for another six weeks.
I built a 1/144 some time in the 70s, now long gone.

Hi Colin,
Okay, it looks like I'm not going to make the finish date as I've yet to start! However I've finished doing some other stuff that I had to do over the last few weeks -hence the lack of input on this forum recently. I aim to make a start on this build this week and just be an 'also ran' as far as the Group Build is concerned.
Cheers!
This is one kit I've been wanting to do for ages... _________________ If you can't Dodge it, Ram it!!!!!!!! |

I made a start today.
The windows need filling as they are a: Too big, and b: too many and in the wrong palces for the prototype. The wing halves are put together and there is a bit of a gap where they fit.
I glued some sprue on the insides...
I fitted the two cabin doors, but as usual with Airfix airliners the cabin doors never seem to fit properly. They're normally too big or too small -as this case!
The windows have been filled in, as were the gappy wing joins. There were faint sink marks where the inside bulkheads locate, so they got filled too.
Then a sand down.

Next to do was to correct the nosegear doors. The kit ones are in just two pieces which means they are completely open with the wheels down or shut with the wheels up -this is incorrect. They should be in five pieces. 2 main doors that are closed unless the nosegear is being operated, 2 side doors and a small one at the back.
You can sort of see what I mean here...
Here's the kit ones, I've marked the area to cut off.
Here's the main doors glued shut.
The remaining bits of gear doors were cut about to produce a 'T' shaped wheel well. The other three doors will be added later.
The wings were glued in place but they were slightly short shot so there is a small nick in the wing.
It was filled with superglue gel and will be sanded back.
I then moved on to the engines. The kit doesn't include the splitter plates which looks wrong.
So I made some out of card and glued them in.
Then they were painted.
More to come....... _________________ If you can't Dodge it, Ram it!!!!!!!!

I didn't make it to yesterday's deadline but I've started so I'll finish!
It's now been primed and sprayed with Halfords Vauxhall Glacier White.

I've started to add the detail on the underside. The black on the engine covers need a second coat. Some of the decals have been added too.

The remainder of the decals have been applied, they are very thin and fragile but of very good quality.
So doing the final touch ups and fitting the undercarrige doors, that's that!
