Welcome to the Airfix Harrier Group Build for which Ratch is Group Build Leader and will take place from 15 March 2008 to 15 May 2008. Only Airfix Harriers may be built, but these may be any of the variants or scales in Airfix packaging. This is the "Chat" thread for the Group Build and any reference material should be posted in the Reference Thread.

If you wish to take part in the Group Build, click on the Usergroups link at the top of the page. Then::

Go to the lower of the two drop-down boxes where it says "Join a Group"

Select "Group Build - Airfix multi-scale Harrier GB"

Click "View Information"

Click on "Join Group".

Ratch will then approve your membership of the Group Build and create a thread for you to record progress of your build.

That's all there is to it!

If you are not sure how Group Builds work, you can read the rules here.

With just a week before take off we have fourteen signed up participants, (one more and we'll have a rugby team   ), so get your boxes from the stash, stare at the plastic lovingly and get ready for the great Harrier GB

If only I could.  My workshop is hors de combat from an attack of builderitis.   It is piled high and deep with the components for our new bathroom and I can only look longingly at the workbench from a distance of 8' over a mound of boxes.

They say they will start on Monday...

I've been looking for images of Harrier pilots, and there are quite a few    but it has raised a question in my mind    some have green helmets, some have white, and one appears to have a silver helmet    Is there a reason for the differences

Okay I hate to be a pill but I'd like to make the observation that when the topic titles said "so and so group build-- so and so's build" instead of just "so and so's build" it was easier to find the posts in the list I get when I click "posts since last visit."

That's all.  No big deal.  Nothing to see here folks.  Move along.

Anyone building 02072, parts 20 & 21 are in white squares, indicating they are alternative parts    Any idea what they are

No idea.  I've just finished off a Falkland Island, Flight Harrier and this morning thought ops I missed a bit, so stuck them on.

Any chance of a pic of the offending items?

I've no idea what they are, but looking at my Hasegawa GR.3 that has them aswell, but they're listed as standard parts so I think I'll fit them to my build.

Hope this helps.

I have a question.  It looks as if the main landing gear doors are closed, in some fashion, after the gear extends.  Am I just seeing things again or is this true, and what would be the proper way to show a Harrier with the engine off? It just looks like the photos show a different arrangement than the (sketchy) instruction sheet for the 1/72 GR.3?  (See the excellent photos posted in the reference section to see what I'm talking about).

I've thought this too, it seems from the photo's I've found that when the aircraft has engines running the doors are closed, but when it is static they are open - hydraulics maybe.

This is what I did on my T.10 which will be gear down but with the pilots fitted as if it were taxiing to the runway.

I cut the closed doors down, the extra bits of the doors left I'll attach to the undercarriage legs.
Best
Rich.

From what I've seen, it would appear that the undercarriage door arrangements for all the Airfix kits is incorrect    and that some surgery is required to make an accurate representation

Another 'heads up', the canopies don't seat properly with the crew inside the T.10    Mine will be open

Yup! Found that out on Monday! Front canopy closes, just the rear that's a problem on mine. I presume the two canopies are independantly operated, so the rear could be slightly open whilst the front is closed?
