This time I will be building a Mosquito Mk IV series I, using 03019 and the Paragon Mosquito prototype conversion set. _________________ Bubbly! |

Here goes!
First off alterations.
The Prototype, PR.I and thus B.IV srs. I did not have the strengthening strip on the rear starboard fuselage side.
Thus, this and the raised detail of the fighter access door were removed:
Next, because of the shorter engine nacelles the single-piece flaps needs to be re-instated on the wings.
To do this the inspection plate was scraped off, the flap line scribed in and filler used to remove the the other flap breaks.
Port wing (as kit), Starboard wing (modified):
Surgery was then performed to remove fighter nose and the nacelle rears. At this point I also superglued the resin blanks into exhaust location points:
And finally a dry run to see how close my nose removal marries up to the resin bomber nose.
Not too bad, a bit of sanding will be required |

Progress has been steady over the past week mainly because a lot of it has been associated with the cockpit.
To improve on the Airfix cockpit the single most important piece of information to remember is:
The main spar passes through it
The first thing to do is get the position of this key piece of construction.
The wings are where we start by removing the forward portion of the locating tab back as far as where rivet lines show the radiator rear to be:
Next a dummy spar was made from the thickest plasticard I had. The height of this was only that of the location holes in the fuselage sides. Plenty of dry runs were required to ensure good placement:
Then a couple of small blanking plates were added to the front of the holes.
These were held in place with blu-tack whilst the fuselage was seperated before being cemented in place. The inside faces were then filled and sanded down:
Also in the shot are the tailwheel which has had it's groove filled, early marks didn't have the Twin Contact type, and the actual mainspar piece.
After this rather labour intensive exercise I decided to complete most of the pre-assembly painting:

Did the prototype feature the exposed spar without the radio shelf on top of it? _________________ currently struggling with

No. The radio shelf was fitted on the prototype. Just rather bare. Trying to build up the various transmitters and receivers is whats taking the time. There's a lot of boxes to get into very little space!!!!!! _________________ Bubbly! |

Progress has been very good and the finishing line is in sight.
I stayed away from the cockpit and decided to press on with the wings etc.
The fitting of the undercarriage has always been a tricky proposition on this kit for me, but this time (maybe because the nacelles had surgery) no problems arose.
Next the nacelles were fitted to the wings and the resin ends added and faired in with filler.
Finally the conversion kit exhausts were fitted, scratch-built air intakes put in place and the assembly given a priming coat of paint.

With the easy bit over I returned to the cockpit.
The main spar, radio shelf, the bomb bay top and front were fabricated. These and the kit floor were then secured to the starboard fuselage half.
During this the kit instrument panel was reshaped in one appropriate to a bomber version and the rudder pedal area boxed in:
The instrument panel assembly then fixed to the resin nose half and painted Revell #9 Anthracite.
Rather than source a specific panel decal I sifted through the 'bank' and using the diagrams in the excellent Modellers Datafile #1, cut others to make up a rather good representation.
The radio fit is just rough approximation as I could find no reference material on a MkIV installation.

good job on the under carriage- tricky proposition is understatement of the century, it's an overcomplicated nightmare. _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

But better by far than the Hasegawa Mossie undercarriage. I didn't want the undercarriage in the way during painting when I last built an Airfix Mossie, so I gambled on being able to 'snap' it into place as one of the last jobs having assembled the legs, tie bar and wheels in advance. It worked!

The Hasegawa legs don't have the "X" bars. Any good ways of simulating them? _________________ currently struggling with

Anyway, further cockpit painting was done and masking tape seat harnesses added:

The last major assembly job complete. The shorter span tail pieces from the conversion set were used as all references I found stated that all PRI/BIV series I aircraft were fitted with these:
Work was then done to the underside. The camera ports and drift sight window were drilled out, and the split line in the bomb bay, which is only present on fighter-bomber variants, was filled. The whole aircraft was then primed for final painting.
The base colours of Hu29 and Hu90 were then applied using these two photos as guides for the demarcation lines:

Next the Dark Green was applied and a coat of Gloss varnish followed this before the vacformed tranparencies were Clearfixed in place:
