I hadn't any medium bombers in the stash so it was a decision between the Wellington, Hudson and Blenheim.
All three were bid for on e-bay and the a Blenheim was won, so thats what i'll be building OOB. |

I shall be starting this build in a wee while and will be building a RAF 55SQ Blenheim IV North Africa 1942.
Now on the paint diagrams which come with the new decals it says the underneath is azure blue which I have, but the camo on top is Dark Mediterranean Blue and Light Mediterranean Blue. This in real life would have been painted over the green and brown standard RAF camo as a block underneath the serial numbers on the fuselage is left in the old colours.
Humbrol do a mediterranean blue but is it light or dark ? and who make the med colours anyway ? I've had a look on the web but have had no joy. |

That sounds like an incredibly bizarre camouflage - I wonder what on earth the purpose of it was? If the aircraft weren't operating over the sea they'd have been visible for miles!
I have my doubts about the accuracy of Humbrol's Azure in any case - this link seems much paler, though I have heard that there were two versions of Azure, one rather darker than the other - http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=35231
This is dark Mediterranean blue - http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=35050
Or possibly - http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=35109
And light Mediterranean blue - http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=35177 (which to me resembles Humbrol's 'Azure' rather closely!)
I think these are all 'near enough' FS colours, from this website - http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_uk.htm
The site also give Humbrol colours (be warned, there is a fair bit of mixing involved!) but I don't know how up to date these are. |

Some 55 Sqn Blenheims were used on anti-shipping strikes from Fuka.
This scheme was also used on some Malta-based Beauforts. _________________ Bubbly! |

That blue + blue + blue will look similar to the two tone blue modern helicopters camo. Wasn't a similar one used on the Harrier too ? _________________ Pax Britannica

I don't know how well documented they are, but I have come across the 'blue' Blenheim's before.
If you're looking for straight-from-the-tin-no-mixing then I would suggest the following:
Light Mediterranean Blue - Hu 157
Dark Mediterranean Blue - Hu 25
Azure Blue - Hu 47
Comparing Humbrol chips with BS chips these are quite close, although the match for Azure Blue is near enough is good enough. If you don't mind mixing then Humbrol say:
Azure Blue - 49 parts Hu 34 + 10 parts Hu 25 + 1 part Hu 33. to simplify it you could say 5 white, 1 blue, plus a dash of black.
As mentioned above Humbrol Azure (157) is nothing like the WWII MAP colour, but it does look like Light Mediterranean Blue, probably a mix-up with the BS381c specs.

I'm building the Hornby release Blenheim which I bought from a model shop in Liverpool.
I've started painting the cockpit and various other small bits and pieces while i wait for the decals and the paint to turn up.
i normally paint a lot of items whilst still on the sprue as its easier to keep the whole sprue gate steady whilst hand painting.

A bit further into the build.
Parts went together very well for an airfix kit of this vintage.

The Decal sheet arrived today with the painting guides on. I'm going to go with PeeBeeps painting suggestions as the originators of the decal sheet admit to not really knowing the correct FS numbers for the various blues involved.
Started painting the underneath of the aircraft.
Will be away on holiday now for 10 days.
I bought the decals online from Blackbird models who have some very good non mainstream manufacturers in their cat. no P+P charges either
I will certainly use them again and again. They have Airfix Lightning F3 (New) in stock for £3.99 beats paying e-bay prices ! |

Hello thomasweir
I’m looking forward to see your build and how it progresses.
Your paint scheme sounds really interesting.
I’m glad your Blemheim’s fit is better than the spare kit I have.
The fit of the two fuselage parts is just too bad to ever join.
A happy holiday to you.
All the best from Jesper. |

The fuselage halves on my kit were warped, and whenever I hear the word "warp" I think of (what else?) Klingons. So I just "went Klingon" on it and bent it back into shape. If you look closely at the photo of the fuselage in my thread you can see one of the "white" marks where the plastic was bent back into shape.
It seemed to work OK. _________________ “Build what YOU want, the way YOU want to, and above all, have fun.”

My Blenheim so far.
The undercarriage, props and other tiny aerials have been left off at the moment for ease of painting. Cockpit glass is masked off with Maskol. The cockpit glass did not fit properly and so plenty of clear fix was applied to plug the gaps. It will be painted tonight.
