I'm going to be building the Kamen Seasprite - never built it before, but it looks a lovely little kit.

Here's a sprue shot - four sprues of dark grey plastic plus one clear, with little discernible flash and fairly discrete rivet detail.

I'm off and running.

Started on the cockpit.  Not a bad amount of detail, with three pilot figures.  Slight surprise that the instructions call for the seat cushions to be painted bright red!

Couldn't resist doing a dry fit of the fuselage - such a nice looking beast, and a little bigger than I was expecting.

Making steady progress.

The pilots and cockpit are now complete.  I found a reference pic which showed the little chap sitting in the back seat with a yellow bonedome, so I repainted him because I thought it would add a splash of colour.

Put some subassemblies together:
- engine section and cockpit roof instrument panel

- main and tail rotors.  The rotor head was actually broken on the sprue so I've had to glue it back together.  I'm hoping the repair is strong enough.

Going well so far - very little flash and the pieces fit together beautifully.

Progress this weekend:

- fitted the transparencies into the fuselage halves: two small windows in the nose, one small window on the starboard side and a large one next to the rear seat on the port side.
- fitted the cockpit & cabin assembly into the fuselage

It was at this point that a small catalogue of disasters set in.

The cabin consists of the main part (floor, seats et al), plus an overhead ceiling/instrument section.  I'd misread the instructions in that it said to fit the overhead part to the lower part first, then stick the whole lot into the fuselage, whereas I stuck in the main part first.

This shouldn't have been a problem... except for the fact that I'd stuck the main part into the port side, which meant the overhead section wouldn't fit.  I ended up having to carve off a section from the overhead, plus the arm of the rear figure.

Not so bad then, as with a little brute force & ignorance, I got it in... except just as I was ensuring it was seated correctly, I pushed against the large window, and out popped the transparency!

Resisting the urge to try a small test flight out of the (first floor) window, I've managed to get the window back in, but I'm not certain that the windscreen is now going to fit, as the overhead section sticks out quite a long way.  Given how well the rest of the kit has fitted so far, I'm assuming this is because I've cocked something else up too...

Is it just me that has these "Oh bum!" moments?  I seem to have them with every build...

I believe this is just part of the hobby.  I have at least one "oh bum" moment with every kit.  Usually MORE than one.  If it weren't for those moments, this hobby would be just as sedate and unexciting as it appears to be to the uninitiated.   But with those lovely moments of pure uncertain existential fear that there is no God and I can't even build a simple little model kit--well now that's what I call FUN.

Yes, I am a teensy bit peculiar.

These things happen, and I seem to have moments like that on most builds, or times when I'll sit and stare at the instructions for ages trying to figure out how it all goes together!

I'm sure you'll get there,

Paula

Cut it in half and fix the problem, I've got a razor saw around here somewhere if you want to borrow it!

Why, have you cut that in half with a razor saw?

Recently, I've been mostly filling and sanding...and filling... and sanding... Actually, that's not fair - it has required very little filling - just a little superglue to make sure the seams are level.

I've sanded off the rivets too (sorry Stu!) - although they weren't quite as overdone as some of the 'copters being built, they were still a bit heavy.

I was looking at the painting destructions last night, and they're horribly blurry - anyone want to hazard a guess at the colours of the top of the rotors, and of the tail rotor.  I'm assuming it's white for the former, but there isn't any indication about the tail at all.

All sanding is done now, and I've started adding various bits and bobs to the airframe.  I took pictures, but forgot to bring them to work to upload, so I'll post them tonight.

The good news is that I hadn't mucked up the canopy, which fits quite nicely!

Here's a pic of progress, along with various bits and bobs to be stuck on later.
