Thanks for the greeting Adrian.
I have just got a Catalina from Vince at MFS so that is what I will be making up for this Seaplane Group Build. Maybe the all black PBY American version in the kit.

I have made a slow start with my Catalina.
So far I have done work on the smaller parts like the depth charges and their mounts.
The fuselage halves have been cleaned up.
The propellors have been refined with scalpel blade and fine sandpaper.
The wing centre section has been assembled. I found that the upper and lower parts were slightly warped and needed careful adjustment whilst the cement was drying. In the end the completed part was firm and true. The engine cowlings fitted well with slight tilt outwards. The large landing lights have been made to fit into the leading edge slots. I haven't epoxied them in yet since I intend to paint them silver on the inside.
Two interesting things about the kit.
1. The depth charges have small plastic circles which fit around the rear of the items. Of the four in the kit one is definitely thinner than the other three.
2. The wheel hubs are not identical. One has centre detail whilst the other has none! However I like the way that the wheels are assembled with a separate hub. Good when it come to painting.
My impression of the kit so far is good, yes I know it has old moulding problems of fit and there are lots of rivets on the wings, but I feel that it is still well worth the effort of making up.
I'll be doing the all black PBY5A as flown in the Solomon Islands in 1942-3.
More follows with photos.

Just three photos of the construction so far.
1. Some of the cockpit parts, front gun turret and gun, and propellers.
2. The centre section almost complete except for the DF loop
3. The fuselage halves spray painted with acrylic Humbrol 78 with transparencies attached (except part 15 which went AWOL)
Am quite impressed with this kit even though it is over 45 year old . More follows.

Hi Ratch,
Sorry to disappoint you but that's just the kit plastic unpainted.
I hope to finish the model as a Black Cat as flown in the Solomon Islands in 1942/3.
Today I have assembled the outer wing panels.
More later.

Quite a bit more progress made recently. Model virtually fully assembled with only a few detail parts still to be added.
Here the model as it is today painted with acrylic Humbrol 33 and three coats of klear.
Next job is to line the cockpit canopy with thin strips of black decal and also the two gun emplacements.
More follows.

Finally finished! Here it is as of today
All in all I'm glad I joined this group build because if I hadn't I would never have build this Catalina.
I thought that it was a good kit requiring just a little 'modelling skill' to complete it.
The decals for the Black Cat were a little pale especially the white star and band. Also the rivet detail tended to trap air and this could be seen through the decal. Maybe I will mask them off and spray some white on the star and bars later.
A big model results and it will only just fit into the display cabinet.
Best

Very nice work indeed Ron!
You have done a very good job on the glass houses, the framing is excellent.
All the best |

Lovely looking black cat, beautiful work on the canopy framing as usual. Seeing how well yours has turned out I'm very be tempted add it to my WW2 twin collection, maybe as a flying hour kit.
Best

Marvelous build Ron, but I do have a question to ask, why the grey tyres? _________________ If I'm not model building, I'm dirtbike riding |

Hi kitnut617,
Actually they are not quite as light grey as they look here on the model. Maybe it was the effect of the salt water!
I don't like Hu33 for tyres (as recommended in most ARFIX kit instructions) I prefer a very dark grey instead. Some modellers use a mixture of black and very dark blue. Just personal preference.
