The mails I get from Airfix tend to be about new releases etc but the latest one featured its current top five bestsellers.

The Sea King and Sea King gift set featured therein, which surprised me a bit (as, personally, I'd never buy a whirlybird), but not as much as the kit in the #1 spot... the Vulcan.

Beautiful aircraft of course, but I doubt it'd have featured in my top ten guesses for the #1 spot.

Still, something a bit different from Airfix and something I hope they keep up.

I was more surprised that the 1/24 Mossie was at #3
Maybe positions were determined by value of sales rather than number of kits sold

Ah yes, could be. Would explain why no Spitfire featured in the top 5 (though then again with so many Spitfires in the mix it's harder for a single example to lead the pack).

The Hornby top 5 is similar with pre-orders for a £550 set of locos at #1 :sofa:

With reference to the Sea King, curiously(I thought), Arthur Ward lists one as one of Airfix's top half dozen sellers of all time in the Appendices to his book.

I think Ratch hit it "the nail on the head". Sounds more like a sales ploy, for beginners, or parents stuck for a gift for a child, to spend money on the more expensive kits.

I can't believe the Kitstaller Basset Beagle didn't make the top five... :Whistling:

For some reason, I'm not getting the Airfix email updates any longer. Must be a spam filter in the way somewhere. Can someone post of a list of the best sellers?

Sorry Steve, I deleted the emails as the lists seems spurious
In the Top Seller List,
#1 was the Vulcan
#2 the 1/24 Mosquito
there were only 5 in each list
IIRC the Victor was #1 in the Top 5 Pre-Orders

You remembered pretty well, I thought, Ratch. As others and yourself have remarked, this is only a bit of marketing and not that meaningful. Otherwise it would be commercially sensitive!

Good to see some of their WWI offerings seem to be shifting. Should encourage them to produce further offerings from that era.

Do we actually know what's in the Somme Centenary set yet?

(Hoping against all hope for something new, accurate and 1/72 scale! )

I think we do Sarge; from the Airfix website:

Fokker E.II Eindecker (Length: 100mm, Width: 140mm, Pieces: 34)
Royal Aircraft Factory BE2.c (Length: 115mm, Width: 156mm, Pieces: 54)
Male Tank Mk.1 HMLS Dragonfly 1916 (Length: 135mm, Width: 55mm, Pieces: 49)
WWI British Infantry - 43 figures
WWI German Infantry - 45 figures
Diorama base (Length: 650mm, Width: 335mm)

So no new tanks, unless the Mk.1 is a new mould...

So they've included an AFV kit that's been known to be fundamentally flawed for several decades and two figure sets that are completely inappropriate for the Somme, all in a completely different scale to their shiny new aircraft kits.....Is that a fair and accurate summary?
