A sideways question on the Buffalo - if you look at the first pic on David's link, there's a guard or something over the rear of the left hand track - sort of a honeycomb of sheet metal. Most buffalos seem to have them and I had been mulling over whether to try and scratch build them for my GB. But, looking at the photos on the page above, the 'top' buffalo only has one, while the one in the bottom photo lacks them entirely (like the Airfix kit). Damage? Optional extras? Or what? Scrapers to take crud off the tracks?
So - what are/were they and can I rationalise not faffing about with lots of bits of plasticard?

I believe that these are the Buffalo's steering vanes.....The water flow from the tracks was redirected by these vanes which served to improve the vehicles water-borne maneuverability. I would guess that these vanes were quite susceptible to damage once the vehicle was ashore and they were easily lost.
