Prepare to be outraged.

(I always enjoy being outraged, so I thought I'd let my forum buddies in on the fun). :D

I saw some very old decals on eBay recently--and decided to buy them because they are nothing less than the almost-holy grail--JAPANESE HINOMARU IN 1/72 AND THE CORRECT COLOR!

But they were really, really old. But I bought them anyway because they were cheap and you never know...

When they arrived I saw that they were special decals indeed--a special IPMS printing, complete with a letter.

Image

...dated 1967!

Image

But I needed decals for my old Tamiya Shinden (as old as the decals) so I cut a few of them out and put them in the water.

Image

No disintegration.  No cracking.  Oh--and did I mention--no yellowing?

Image

How did they work?

Great.  Better than great.  Super thin.  Opaque.  Superb in every way and over FORTY YEARS OLD.

Image

Why does this bother me?  Because you can buy a new kit today (or new decals) and get something that is not as good, when new, as these decals are after four decads of "aging."  I mean, if Authenticals could make decals like this in 1967, why is it so hard to do now?

Ayup Dan...

I wonder that too sometimes.

Those Hinomaru aren't RED are they ? just off in fact. Nice.

If that's a Tamiya Shinden, you're embarrassing me.

That's the old Tamiya clunker alright.

Here's a quote from the letter (pictured above) that explains a little about these decals.

"...we believe that these decals are among the finest available.  They have been printed with extra glue.  When put on, they stay on.  They have been printed with enamel rather than laquer paints to avoid cracking or peeling with age.  The finish is matt. The film itself is tough and flexible."

I guess that explains part of the reason for the remarkable quality.  Don Garrett and company went "all out." :D

I started mine a couple of years ago, I think. It's nearly finished, but has languished for some time waiting paint. I now have to either find (uh, not likely) the wheels that go under the fins, or scratch these, as they've broken off with handling. I'll do it one day.
