Hey all, although the birthday model suggestion on the old airfix forum was seen as a joke, i think if we put our minds ( and money ) towards it we could do a darn cool G.B !

If you are not familliar with the 'Birthday models' Group build, its like this - Build the model of your birthday month featured on the airfix calendar.

If you dont have one, here are the featured month models.

January - Douglas SBD 5 dauntless - good luck finding one !

February- BAC TSR2.

March- BAC concord - 1:72 .

April - Queen mary 2 -

May - BOBMF

June - Avro lancaster G-for george

July - De-havilland Mossie - Mk XVIII

August-Red arrows Gnat And /or Hawk

September - Messerschmitt BF109 E - 1:72

October - German 'E' Boat

November - Spitfire Mk 1a - 1:72

December - Dennis fire engine.

there... thats all of em ...

A very egsausted fingered Joe 164...

That's good. Mine will be the Bf 109 E, one of my favourite non-British subjects. But I'll have to thwart the Bf 109 E canopy snatcher. The last 3 from 3 different manufacturers I have purchased all had the canopies missing

I have only made an airfix 109 once before, and I found that a few months ago, and that is the one that made its way into my diorama based around falaise (see the post diorama update). A good idea joe - depends on what the boss says I guess, and it might be best to wait until there are a few more moddelers!!

This sounds like a novel idea, I can't remember seeing it on the old forum, must get my eyes tested

As I was born in July I would get to build the Mossie, and I have one in the stash too , count me in if this goes ahead.

Cheers

I agree that it is a great idea, Joe and it will definitely become part of the Group Builds. I would suggest that where a subject has more than one version of kit available, then they all should be allowed. I say that because I tend to have the cheaper versions and have a different Mossie in my stash!

Before we go ahead with it, there is a lot of work needed to set up the FAQ and Group Build procedures. There are also only a few members at the moment and we could find ourselves with a Group Build with only one member - or worse - none!

So, I am aiming to start with either the month of July (Mosquito) or possibly August (Gnat or Hawk) for the inaugral Birthday Group Build. There are low-price kits of those subjects and are possibly easier for the newbies!

Ratch is running our first GB (HMS Manxman) next month and I would like to wait until that one has been well established first. This so that we solve any issues with the GB system before unleashing the rest! I have never taken part in a GB either so I need to do one so I can understand what the issues are.

That does not mean that other GBs will be ignored either and voting on subjects for all types of GBs will start quite soon. Knowing that there will be birthday GBs too will allow us to juggle the GBs a bit and avoid duplicate builds.

Sounds good. Will the manxman be going from the 1st of may, or will it go later? Trouble is, I have my SAT's in the first week of may, so I may run a little late if I do join (which I hope), and incase I get the manxman with my FH's, it may take a while...

Originally, the HMS Manxman GB was going to start on the 10th May on the old site. It certainly won't be running on here before then and more than likely won't start until late into the month. It all depends on the organising.

So, you can stop worrying about the GB and concentrate on your SATs! Good luck with them too!

I'm another one born under the sign of the Bf 109E I'm in for it, although I'm not sure if I've got the kit in my stash.

This could be my perfect excuse to buy the 1/12 109. They get pretty cheap, and I've never made it this big before!

Also - anyone know what the Airfix 1/48 Bf 109 is like. My plans for the 1/72 seem far off now, due to some research into the paint scemes - I don't think I could do the doppled effect just yet, and not on such a large model!

A Bf 109E can be done with plain light blue fuselage sides rather than mottled ones. That was quite common early on during the Battle of Britain.

Weren't we going to start Manxman on May 1st? My plan is still to start then, as I'm not working on the 2nd or 3rd either, so I could get a fair bit of work done on the kit.

Hi Richard,

I recall Ratch saying in one post a while ago, on the old site, that 10th May was the earliest date he could start from. So, I have always been working to that date.

Unfortunately, due to recent events elsewhere, we have to get some new Group Build FAQs online in time for the build. I was sent some draft GB FAQs based on the old site yesterday but they need a little editing prior to us discussing them.

As Ratch is Group Build Leader and is prepared to lead it using, ostensibly, the old GB FAQs then so am I. I am also happy if the GB starts on 1st May as it is obvious people have been making arrangements based on that date.

My participation in the GB may be a bit delayed though.....

I'm off for a snooze now and will contact Ratch when I arise!

Dave

This GB would have to be the sort of thing that went on every month, in the background or on once, and members have to oppertunity to build any kit they want on the calendar...

Got two but haven't built em yet but I been a bit delayed with other models and I had trouble with broken parts

and it isn't fair because unless you let me back a different model I wont be able to do it . As my birthday is in January or If anyone can find a 1/72 one someone or a cheep! 1/48 that I wouldn't be able to wreck .
