I grew up with Airfix in the 60's/70s, a period when it seemed that new and better kits were being released almost every week, and with the Airfix magazine to help with builds, and encouragement to extend skills not only in making the best of their products, but in to conversions and even scratchbuilds.

Oh, and slot cars in particular as well.  The choice at the time in the UK was Scalextric, or Airfix - for me, it had to be Airfix of course, especially as a lot of the slot cars were based on Airfix's already fine static 1/32 car kits.

And that's what I do these days for hobby time - hunt down original Airfix static and / or slot cars from the period, parts, 'glue bombs' or whatever, then blend those with the Airfix re-releases and modern slot car motor components to make the best I can and preserve as much as I can, with a hoped-for end result of a great model of an Airfix car, plus it can belt round the slot track as well !

And as I've a keen interest also in racing / rallying / road cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's, I do add in 1/32 cars from other kit and slot car manufacturers.  And if the one I want to do next isn't available in some form, then I'll even scratchbuild....

Cheers !

Aston Martin DB5

Image

MRRC reprint of the original Airfix shell, Airfix static kit interior parts, modern motor ( fitted actually under the bonnet, of course ), Airfix steering, driver from the Escort kit.  Detailing improved - especially reversing the raised panel lines in to recessed ones, and sharpening up the headlight detail.  Finished in Oxford blue paint.

Renault Dauphine

A 'glue bomb' of a kit, recovered, built as an RAC rally car.  Original Airfix cube motor, and steering, integrated in to the original static chassis, along with the original wheels plus Airfix slot car tyres.

Nice work, great detail.
Does it have a Scalextric motor and brushes hidden under there too? :)

Classic Airfix Minis !

Image

No superdetailing here, just a quick recovery job on a pair of Airfix Minis, to make a fun pair of cars to race with ! A mix of Airfix static kit and slot car parts, with 'of the era' decalling and numberplates.

Porsche Carrera 6 (906)

MRRC reprint of the Airfix static kit shell, including glass and lighting.  Motor hidden away under the rear deck, to allow a full scratchbuilt interior.  Airfix slot car wheels, tyres and steering.  Other superdetailing and improvements.

Impessed to think there is the motor & wiring crammed in there too. I would be too scared to race them as I would probably flip out on the first bend and spoil all the hard work.

Ferrari 250 LM

Image

I used one of the recent grey plastic reprints of this kit, for the shell, glass, interior detail etc, merged with Airfix / MRRC slot car chassis, steering, tyre and wheels parts. The motor is mounted under the rear deck, to allow space for a full interior. I also corrected some of the errors of the original kit - e.g. height of roof, shape of rear panel, and fettled the details up a bit.

MG 1300 and Morris 1100

Image

Image

A recovery of an MG 1300, and a conversion to an Morris 1100, from one 'glue bomb', one part kit, and a pile of other static kit and Airfix slot car bits. The chassis are Scalextric ones that more-or-less fit to start with, with mid-mounted motors and Airfix/MRRC steering units at the front. The Minilite wheels are Revell slot car ones. FYI, the Morris 1100 rally car is based of a specific real vehicle - one entered by Pat Moss in to the 1962 Liege-Sofia-Liege rally.

CONVERSION - Mini Broadspeed GT, and original Mini Cooper

Image

Conversion of an Airfix Mini static shell to the Broadspeed GT fastback version, motorised using Airfix / MRRC slot car bits and the nice current Scalextric Minilite wheels.  A lot of superdetailing as well ! Built as one of a pair to race, the other being the BTCC Mini Cooper in the background.

Ford 3L (P68)

Image

A most beautiful-looking car, a perfect synthesis of form and function... An original Airfix red plastic static kit, merged with matching Airfix/MRRC slot car parts.  I used the static kit wheels, with improved spinners, cloaked with Scalextric slot car tyres. The motor is hidden under the rear deck, allowing a full interior. The kit is it comes is very good, though it needed detailing, and quite a lot of work on the glazing.

Cheers !

Scratchbuilding - Citroen 2CV

Image

Though I'd stretch myself a bit, and try a simple scratchbuild - so I picked on the Citroen 2CV. I picked the 2CV because - apart from the fact that it's bonkers and I like it  - the basic shape is easy to do, being two simple flat sides that taper in a bit at the front, plus a flat sheet that runs over the top, making up the bonnet / front window / roof / rear window / boot. Of course, the devil's in the detail - those curvy wings, that corrugated bonnet, that crinkly grille...... Unfortunately, I couldn't replicate the mad wallowing that goes on as the real thing tries to turn a corner - this slot car version is well behaved in that respect !

Build & progress log and more pics at -

Cheers !

Austin Healey ('Playcraft') 1/32

Image

This is not Airfix..... Neither is it Aurora, though a lot of the details like the wheels / tyres, multi-part body panels and even the colour of the plastic indicate it should be; but it's not the right version of the Austin Healey, and it's got 'Playcraft' moulded in to the chassis. I received this as a broken 'glue bomb', stripped it down entirely, and rebuilt, scratch-replacing missing / broken parts, and integrating a slot car motor under the bonnet, with a propshaft running through the kit's transmission tunnel, along with Airfix / MRRC wheels / tyres and steering. It's an absolute blast to drive - skinny tyres and no weight at the back, coupled with a heavy nose & too much power, lead to tail-out cornering all the way, and fishtailing as the hammer goes down on the straight - just like the real thing, a 'beast' !

MGA 1600 ( Lindberg )

Image

I built this a a direct racing companion for the Austin Healy, with similar mechanicals, performance and handling. The MGA is a lovely car !  This is based on the Lindberg 1/32 kit, the Lindberg being a simplified reprint of, I believe, an Aurora original. So , a lot of superdetailing went on, plus some reprofiling of the shell to improve the lines.

Build log and more pics on this link -

I'll just knock the dottle out of my pipe.....

Thank you for the encouraging comments! Anybody tried the links to any of my build logs / extra pictures, and do you think the idea of doing a build log this way works ?
Cheers
