Cammett have produced a resin set to convert the 1/72 scale Airfix Nimrod into the AEW.3 version. The conversion is a work of art and bears testiment to the skill and dedication of the craftsman resposible for the master. The conversion consists of eight pieces of light grey resin, beautifully cast and carefully packed in three bubble wrap bags.

The first part is the solid resin nose, which weighs in at 60.5g. This is designed to be fitted below and forward of the kit windscreen. The piece has a very fine surface with very nice engraved lines and raised ribs. There are internal ribs onto which the kit cockpit fits.

Picture background is a cutting mat with a 1cm grid.

The tail section is cast with a foam core to cut weight down (still 108g though). Again it is very well cast with fine surface detail of recessed panel lines and raised ribs. The upper surface has a slot for the fin section to fit into. Mine has a blemish in one are which is probably the foam core showing through.

The replacement vertical tail section has the fillet cast with it in one piece, the rudder is separate. Again very fine surface detail. The fillet measured out to about 2mm on the resin block, which is still overscale, but who's going to be looking at that once the radomes are in place!

The tailplanes come in two pieces, again with surface detail, which is absent on the injection kit parts.

The instructions consist of 4 pages, one typewritten instructions and two with various cutting diagrams and the fourth with actual photographs. No information is given on colour schemes or decals required, probably on the reasonable assumption that anyone interested enough to purchase the conversion is more than capable of researching and sourcing these themselves.

The resin parts are very substantial and add to the already large proportions of the kit. An additional 75g of weight has to bee added to the nose to counteract the extra weight in the tail. Here are some shots with a fuselage half.

The conversions are available direct from Cammett, very reasonably priced at UKP24.95 inc VAT. I found the shipping to be very resonable and the parts were packed very well and shipped incredibly quickly. I would highly recommend this conversion.

To compliment it, I would like to see a metal undercarriage gear set produced. The wing gears are pretty solid, but the nose is quite delicate and the addition of 140g in the nose would have me concerned.
It would also be nice to see a decal sheet produced with some of the schemes the AEW.3 wore. e.g.
Pic 1 Grey

Pic 2 two tone white/grey

A set of seamless intakes and a photo-etch weapons bay would be nice.  A very promising start for the new Airfix kits, hopefully there will be a very active aftermarket sector catering for the other new kits due this year.
