Excellent choice. I have this one in the stash as well as the F2/F6 version.
if the Lightning had been picked for the next single aircraft GB I would have built one of the two. |

Well it's time to kick off - there are 6 choices though I've already decided which one a while back.
F1 - 74 sqn Coltishall UK 1962
F1A - 56 sqn Wattisham UK 1962
F2 - 92 sqn Leconfield UK 1965
F3 - 23 sqn Leuchars Scotland 1964
F3 - 29 sqb Wattisham UK 1973
F3 - 111 sqn Wattisham 1965
Anyway - I've opted for the 65 of 111 - slap in the height of the cold war.
To start with is the cockpit - pretty well detailed for box stock
Alot of this is SG black so it can all be sprayed. Having just done it - here's 3 parts.
As a little paint goes a long way with an AB I decided not to waste it and did any other black parts - in the end I had enough to do the spine (which will act as an undercoat - and still more to do the fin too)
Excess paint was used of fin with a quick mask and spray as well.
Option shown - as the kit is well detailed, here's an example of what you get - a score of panels well riveted and recessed. Very good quality. Now a case of let dry overnight and look at picking out cockpit details next.

Been chipping away at this - nothing exciting to show as it's painting the nose intake internals (gun metal) and exhaust internals (burnt bronze) before these can be assembled.
Cockpit coming along well but small parts require minute painting and that does take some time in itself - probably best to show the lot when finished in sub assemblies.
Kit fit is very good and no putty used so far so it's a good chance from some of the other wet and dry sanding exercises in the past. Other smaller parts to be glued are the top and bottom flap halves so that's not worth a big pic either - at least all the elbow work with smaller stuff gets out the way first though. _________________ the evolution of the modern car is such it now ressembles a toaster. |

Ok, some of the more in progress shots. Still to be finished but internal details at this stage.
Internal burners
Variable inlet spike (rear half) and compressor blades

Thanks. Finishing of intakes proved somewhat disappointing. Really good detail - just that you can't see right down the intake. Some simple solutions see builders reflective chrome tape added down the inside of the duct - affording a MUCH better view. Only issue is removing the internal ejector pins marks on the inside and sanding the inside of the ducting.
Difference between chrome silver (paint) and builders solar tape.
1 half complete of inner duct.
Burners were also finished off - brass was then resprayed with a gloss smoke gray finish allowing a deep colour of burnt bronze. _________________ the evolution of the modern car is such it now ressembles a toaster. |

Been busy working away on this - finally finished the front inlet duct and rear engines - just the cockpit to go - so near completing the internals and it's been quite a slow pace to make sure it looks ok.
I've dry fitted the duct thinking I probably wouldn't be able to see inside after and the hard work. As it turns out you can see right down into the compressor blades - which is great.
I'll edit this with pics when I've uploaded them. Still to complete minor cockpit details and then it can all be put together into the fuselage halves.
Inlet to compresser - measures down to a depth of 8cm - so pretty good to be able to see right into it.
Burners - alot darker without flash but has a nice lustre to it
