Although the Katy build only starts today (15th July), it seems that some people have already jumped the gun!

I also jumped the gun a bit by making some decals to replace the kit ones, as you can see below on the left, next to the kit decals. As I printed on white decal paper, I had to outline the white of those decals which are white, including the big crosses.

Today I spent about two hours comparing the kit with stills from "Ice Cold in Alex". I jotted some of the differences and now have a list of 30-plus items I have to add or attend to! Having done that, I separated all the Ambulance parts from the Fire Tender.

Having cleaned up the chassis and floor, I glued them together. Then I glued the bonnet top and sides to the cab front bulkhead which was fixed to the front mudguards.

After removing some flash from the rear doors, I removed the left door's handle as the real thing only has a single handle on the right door.

Next step will be to work my way through my "little" list doing all those bits that need doing before any painting starts.

Dave

The "hit-list" of 38 items:

The components which have been worked on so far (l to r):
Cabin Bulkhead - See below.
Chassis - bottom of fuel tanks sealed with plastic card
Right-Hand Rear Door - internal door handle added.
Roof - See below.
Right-Hand Side Panel - Vent opening cut out.
Left-Hand Side - Vent opening cut out, bottom stowage door cut off. A plastic card stowage box and new door will replace it.

Close-up of cab bulkhead showing details added so far using plastic card. Door bolt, door hinged-panel catch, door panel blind tab, light switch.

Close-up of roof showing sprue electrical conduit, handles and vents. Four strips of electrical conduit and two handles added, all made from stretched sprue. Internal roof vents added.

Here I have added a plastic card kick-board along the bottom of the bench seat either side of the driver seat. I also trimmed the front ends of the chassis so that the cab will fit better.

Foot-rungs made from stretched sprue have been added underneath each doorway. I have also fitted the gear lever and brake lever. Note that the brake lever must be fitted with the small release lever pointing to the rear, not towards the front as shown in the instructions.

A pair of plastic card mudflaps have been added to the front mudguards.

I have added the following items to the front-side of the cab bulkhead: wheel retaining bracket, door pocket, light switch and a small tab at the top of the door panel.

Next step was to create a mechanism which would allow the rear doors to operate. I am using a method that was shown in an old Airfix Magazine article but in retrospect, I wouldn't use it again!

First of all, I drilled holes in the tabs on the back of the side panels and two holes at the top and bottom edge of each door.

I also drilled holes in the two hinges at the rear of the floor and fashioned four 'U' shaped hinges from 15 amp fuse wire.

The wire is threaded through the holes in the panel tabs and then into the holes drilled into the door edges. At this stage, I haven't trimmed the ends of the wire to the right length.

I'm not sure if I will actually use this mechanism as the wire looks a bit too obtrusive although this may change once the wire has been trimmed and the model has been painted. The Airfix Magazine article also included a working door handle which locked the doors! A bit too fiddly for my liking!

The first-aid stowage boxes, made from plastic card, have been fitted either side of the interior. One stowage box has an open door.

The left-hand side storage box has been added behind cab.

The left-hand side storage box door has been added.

Couple of questions Dave.
1). Is the roof going to be removable? Or is the interior just going to be seen throught the opening rear doors?
2). This is 1/72 scale? In which case - you're MAD, ...MAD, ...Mad I say Having just finished the 1/72 landie which came with the Bloodhound - never again!
Best

Hi Red.

1. I am intending that the right hand panel will be removable.

2. Yes this is 1/72 scale.

I just thought it would be a great opportunity to show what can be done with a few bits of plastic card and stretched sprue. Some bits may have been a bit fiddly but nothing has been difficult.

And yes, I am mad!

Windscreens added to cab front. Rear steps made from plastic card.

Fire extinquisher made from sprue added to right of cab front.

Two views from rear showing folding steps.

Time for painting Katy. Looking at stills from the film, Katy seems to be painted a very light colour. I painted the cab H93 (Matt Desert Yellow) just to see what it looked like .....

..... but I decided to stick with H26 (Matt Khaki). Note the addition of windows. I have also cut off the headlights and will replace them when I have fitted shrouds to them and will mount them on rods.

H26 (Matt Khaki) - Overall (including cab interior)
H106 (Matt Ocean Grey) - Tyres
H74 (Matt Linen) - Interior

Four views showing Katy after the first coat of H26. The cab, bulkhead, right-hand side panel and roof haven't been glued yet as I still have to paint the interior of the body. The wheels haven't been fixed either.

The body interior has now been painted with H74 Matt Linen. I will be picking out some of the detailing before I fit the roof, bulkhead, racks and doors. The right-hand panel will be removable.

All painting will receive a second coat and I will then add a few odds and ends. After that, l will affix the decals and then give Katy a touch of weathering.

Dave

All parts have now received a second coat of paint apart from the tyres. The cab, internal bulkhead, driver seat and steering wheel have been glued. The spare wheel has also been put into position but not glued.

The roof and right-hand panel have been put into place but not glued.

Katy on the sand!

Decals have now been added. These are the decals that I had made myself and not those included with the kit. Note that the rear doors of Katy have one red cross split across both door, not two separate crosses as per the kit.

It looks really nice dave, I'm impressed and fustrated because I seem to have amost given up on what I have found to be one of the worst kits I have made to date !

Really nice, and all of the details really make it a good model...

Thanks Owen.

It's a shame that you are finding your build so frustrating. Although I had been looking forward to having Katy in my collection, I wasn't looking forward quite so much to the actual build. As it turned out, my build has been trouble free so far with only a small problem with one of the moulded door hinges that keeps breaking off! This could affect the operating rear doors - well, one at least.

I had intended to use the figures that came with the model but to be honest they are not worthy of being included. Besides, I could never do Sylvia Syms justice by trying to model her from one of those figures!

I still have to fit the following:

Kit parts - front bumper bar, exhaust and roof vents

Scratch-built parts - shrouded headlamps, facines, bridge plate, rear-view mirrors, stretchers, various bits and bobs - including the all-important starting handle.

Dave

I have now fitted front bumper bar, exhaust and roof vents and I have scratch built shrouded headlamps, facines, bridge plate, rear-view mirrors and a starting handle.

I only have stretchers and a few odds and ends to scratch-build now. To finish I will do some weathering.

Well, the madness is finally over! All construction is now complete with shovels, a medical bag and stretchers added. These were all scratch-built. Note that the stretchers are 2mm narrower than the one included in the kit. This allows them to sit on the racks correctly.

I will leave Katy for a couple of days now to allow the glue and paint to dry and harden properly. Then I'll get on with the weathering.
