As many of you will know the ATF recently lost a valued member and friend, David Maynard.  Like most modellers David accumulated a 'stash' of models, and a very large reference library.  The ATF was requested to help David's partner, Joyce Compton, in the disposal of David's modelling estate.....However the practicalities of directly handling such an enormous collection were somewhat overwhelming for all parties concerned.

Therefore, after much careful deliberation, Joyce has decided to donate David's collection in its entirety to Bovington Tank Museum.  David's books are in the process of being catalogued and those that are not already present in the collection will be added to the Tank Museum's library.  Those books already in the Bovington collection and a significant proportion of David's kits, will be sold by the Tank Museum either directly, at fundraising events such as Tankfest, or online via eBay.

The proceeds of these sales will, I'm quite sure, be a welcome addition to the Tank Museum's coffers and I would encourage ATF members (and modellers in general) to keep an eye out for these items and to bid generously.

Regarding items from David's estate already requested by ATF members.....Any arrangement that has been properly finalised will be honoured.

Other arrangements are now null and void.....Under the circumstances I'm sure you will understand.  If anyone has any questions, kindly PM me.

On a personal note I'd like to add that knowing David, even as little as I did, I think that he would be both very proud of and somewhat humbled by Joyce's decision.  He was always the first to offer help and information to his fellow modellers and I think that the idea that he can continue to do so, via the UK's best AFV repositry, would have brought a wry grin!

David Maynard. 1962-2009. Gone too soon but not forgotten.

All the best

A very thoughtful outcome. Very sad for him to have passed on so ridiculously young.

From the picture I can just imagine David calling up to someone standing at the top of the trench - "Quick, call Adrian, I've found another lump of rock axe head for him"

Spoke at length with Joyce yesterday.....So far around forty of David's books have been added to the Bovington Tank Museum Library.

Hi Andy,
Obviously you had a hand in this decision and I must add my comments to say it was a good one especially as so many books have gone to Bovington.
As for the photo he obviously had a good pit to excavate there with some nice pottery- it takes me back to Castleford in 1974 when we had a huge number of Roman Samian ware pots burnt black and in many fragments- came out by the bucketful from a burnt down shop. In 1974 at Castleford I'd have been looking up at the latest Vulcan and sometimes the Victor coming over about every 20 minutes! Maybe he's looking at something similar.

Hi Stu.....Actually the decision was Joyce's alone.

I immediately supported it, as from what I knew of David, I was quite convinced that he would have liked the idea.....That just a small part of his library has already added so much to Bovington's knowlege base shows just what a well read and above all modest guy he really was.

The fact that the donation made an impossibly large and from Joyce's perspective painful task so much simpler is an enormous bonus.....Bovington have been great, sending vans to pick stuff up and more importantly taking over the massive effort involved in sorting and listing it all.

I'm attempting to make contact with those involved at Bovington, in order that ATF Members (and members of other forums that David frequented) will be informed in advance of the sale of items from David's collection.....No luck so far, but I imagine they may be quite busy at the moment!

With regards to the picture above, I will quote from a recent e-mail from Joyce:
Joyce Compton wrote:
As for the pottery in front of David in the photo – I wonder should you let those who are interested know what it is?  Since he was digging in France, it was very interesting for me to see this stuff – they are sherds from Dressel 1 amphorae (wine carriers from Italy).  As you may know, the Gauls took to drinking wine in a big way, and there were loads of smashed amphora on the site.  In fact, the archaeologists only kept the rims, handles and bases after recording – there is a photo of a huge pile of body sherds which had been discarded.  We get Dressel 1 in Essex, although on a much smaller scale – if we get half-a dozen, it’s like we have struck gold.  You also get them in Sussex and Hampshire.  They are relatively early, hence their general scarcity in Britain – by the time the Romans have landed here properly, they are using different containers.  Those sherds in front of David are from my favourite period (Late Iron Age), so the photo has double enjoyment for me.

Hope that makes sense to the other archaeologists amongst you!

All the best
Sgt.S
