I'm talking about the colour of bombs for the most popular sizes say 1943-44 and the colour coded bands that denote type of filling etc.

BTW in the WW2 1943-44 film Memphis Belle (I understand American bombs were used by RAF?) you see crew riding on top of what looks like black bombs with orange stripes from nods to tail? Are these practice inert bombs just for filming.

Try http://web.ukonline.co.uk.stephen.johnson/arms/  for all type ammunition from 1880-1950, it may be there.
My brief notes taken from my father-in-law's notebook who was an armourer with 29 Sq. say Deep Bronze Green 24 for all live bomb bodies.
Amatol, Baraol and T.N.T. fillings denoted by Light Grey band around nose.
H.E. have Red 1/2 in. band, S.A.P. 1/2 in. white band above red and A.P. have 1/2 in. white bands each side of red band.  Live bombs and rockets have an additional light green band below any of the above.
Practice bombs are white with a green band.

Torpedoes and Depth Charges are usually black and occasionally dark blue.

Hi,

thanks Richard, Mike.
It's a shame I cannot download that document so will have to screen grab it some how.
Both posts are useful however.

ATB,

Ted.
