Hi all,
I'm George James, 19 From Northampton.
Last week I made my first model since I was 10 & I have to say It was one of the most fulfilling exercises of my life that didn't involve a football or a female!
I am absolutely stunned at the quality of the models you guys make, & Some of the ideas you guys come up with are nothing short of ingenious (Aircraft carrier focke Wulf 190 anyone?!).
I have a lot to learn as I am entirely "self taught-" i.e. no-one in my family or any of my friends do models, I've never had advice from anyone else so as a result having lurked on this forum for a couple of days I seem to have picked up (Or retained, as the case may be) some bad habits!
Consequently, the Yak I did yesterday was done in a highly simple fashion- The whole thing was done with one 'Hairy Stick' (check me out- forum slang already!) including the greenhouse of a canopy hence the mess, one tube of 9 yr old glue and a Swiss army knife- there are a lot of things that you guys seem to do by routine that I'd never even heard of- (Klear?!)

I'm already on my second, a 1:72 Airfix Beaufighter, and If you all don't mind I reckon a lot of my time on this forum will be spent mining your guys knowledge . I'm heading into town tomorrow to get my hands on all the stuff I've read about tonight- Klear, Maskol, some proper finishing varnish- to sum up, all the kinds of things you don't even know exist until you read these forums, as well as a decent modelling magazine & a third kit....

Anyway, I'm rambling,
All the best, & thanks for the decent advice I've had already, you seriously have no idea how helpful it is.
George.

Welcome to you George.

As you already has discovered: model building is one of the greatest pleasures in life!

And I must say your Yak is looking really good.

I think you are getting on the right track and I’m sure you will be really pleased with this forum.
I found it about one year ago and I must say my enjoyment of building has risen considerably!

People is very helpful and the spirit is so refreshing you actually want to build more!

By the way I also paint with brush!
All the best from Jesper.

Hi George,
welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy your time here and find it useful.

So long as you are having fun building your models - that's the most important thing. We have a very diverse membership who build at all levels, but the common factor is everyone loves the hobby and enjoys slapping plastic together!
Best
Rich

Hello George and  Welcome  to the Airfix Tribute Forum
Please take a moment to peruse the site Rules    these are to help maintain our relaxed and friendly atmosphere on the site   A moment invested here will ensure you don't go treading on toes or putting foot-in-mouth

The search facility is quite useful. If you have a question about something specific, try the search first    Just remember, if you enter Hurricane a lot more threads will appear than if you search for 14002 (for example)

Most of all, enjoy your time here. Don't be shy, show us your work, tell us what you're doing and don't be afraid to ask questions - the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask

PS. Nice to have another Northamptonian on the site

Thanks Guys, much appreciated. Just got back from Wilko's with my first bottle of Klear, a new kit & a pile of acessories I didn't know existed until I found this site- Thankyou all!

And just to Ratch- where abouts are you based? I'm just outside Moulton, near the Lumbertubs pub. Do you shop at the Welly road model shop? I noticed today how small their range of Airfix Kits is... Very poor!

G'day George and welcome aboard. You'll have fun here, I'm sure. We're a great bunch and remember - the only stupid question is the one that you didn't dare to ask... we'll all help out wherever and whenever we can.

So what's the third kit you've chosen, then?

Sounds like you're building up a stash already....

Dan

Thanks guys, this seems a really friendly forum

Third kit I've chosen is a Hispano 112 "Buchon" (Essentially a spanish bf109) by Academy. Wanted my third to be an airfix one as I'd just found this forum but my Local model shop doesn't have many Airfix fighters in 48th Scale which are the ones I'm enjoying at the moment.

As for a stash- I don't really understand this phenomena yet! I'm working on all 3- I'm going to put some satincote on the Yak after a few touch ups to finish it off tonight & I'll wait for the second coat of Paint on the beaufighter to dry whilst I assemble/paint the cockpit of the Hispano I've bought- efficiency! At the moment I think having a 'stash' would just make me impatient & start rushing the other's I've got. hmm sure that might change though going by the number of people on here who do have a stash...

So Yeah- I'll keep you all updated on my progress- going by the intimidating Paintjob on the Hispano I might be needing some advice!

Thanks for making me feel so welcome.

Hi George and Welcome  to the ATF, hope you enjoy your time here!!

p.s. I never thought I'd have a stash, but with 182 kits in the loft waiting to be built and only 11 finished on my shelf it was only a matter of time before I got hooked!!
