Not long to go now. I'll be building the Boeing Clipper too, although I haven't decided which scheme yet.

Bad form for the GB leader to start so late, but I'm off and running.

Last night saw the washing of sprues, and construction of the wings/sponsons/tailplane.

Here's a pic of progress:

I was surprised at how small it is - for some reason I was expecting it to be a little bigger.

I'll be doing it in the silver scheme - I've ordered some of the Amoco Rub 'n Buff that Hangartime was talking about, so I might have a go with that rather than enamel.

Progess today: painting the insides of the fuselage dark grey. Once it's dry, I shall glue in the windows, then join the halves.

I've also painted the engines gunmetal, and shall drybrush them with a little black and silver later on.

Windows were fitted last night, and the fuselage halves joined.

The windows went in like a dream - not a single fit problem, which I wasn't expecting. I secured them with Clearfix, the first time I've used it but it seemed to go okay. The only problem I had was 'doing a feanor' on one finger whilst cutting them away from the sprue, but it wasn't too deep a cut.

The fuselage was another matter. Fit was good everywhere except the rear of the 'hull' where there is a step - this was warped and required a bit of fiddling to get it aligned. Awaiting final results when I remove the clamps and tape I used to secure it, but I think I'm going to end up with a small step to sand away.

I've also noticed that I didn't properly align the top and bottom halves of one of the wings I glued together last week Going to have to do some reconstructive sanding on that too

If it's too small - you could go for a flying boat mistel! I think there was a seaplane duo the UK tried in the '30's? Don't think it was a Clipper - interesting build though..! 2 four engined planes together.... could raise a few eyebrows....

That would be the Shorts S.21 "Maia", a 'C' Class flying boat, which carried the Shorts S.20 "Mercury":

Further details here.

It's not that the Clipper is too small, just smaller than I expected. I actually think it's going to end up being a really nice end product - Dave's certainly looks good on the webcam (at least it did - it's disappeared now, with only the stand left!)

Well, I did have to finish the repair work having recently glued the wings on. It;s now back on stage!

I think the Clipper is a lovely size and it would have been nice to have seen a 1/144 Sunderland - the 1/72 one being a bit too big for my liking.

I seem (as usual) to be dragging my heels on this build, highlighted by the fact that Dave has finished three in the time it's taken me to do less than half of one.

Anyway, progress is being made. Everything is now had its initial sanding - no filler required as yet - and I'm ready to glue everything but the wings on, ready for painting.

Nothing more will be done until Tuesday night now at the earliest, but once it's all together I'm hoping the rest of it should speed by!

Any more progre... oh, hang on - this one's mine...

Nothing much more to report, to my great shame. To recap progress to date, the fuselage is together, with the tailplane and sponsons on, wings are together but not attached to the fuselage, and the engines are painted and assembled.

After that, everything has been put on hold whilst I indulge in unbridled AMS over Gromit.

I'm going to try to get the wings on this weekend so that I can spray the red across the top. Once that's done, it's on with the Rub 'n Buff.

Did I manage to get any spraying done this weekend? Of course I didn't (I did manage to plant out 50-odd leeks, half a dozen tomato plants and some tree spinach, but that's another story altogether).

However, the wings are now on:

The wing roots need some filling, and I realised I still hadn't fitted the doors to the fuselage. Trying to do that last night, I found there is an obvious reason they tell you to do it before joining the halves - it's very difficult to get them into the holes, and oh-so-easy to drop them through the holes and into the gaping cavity behind

Following my airbrush exploits yesterday, I've sprayed the first coat of gloss red across the top of the wings. This followed a bit of filling at the wing and tailplane joints with Tippex - not much filler required anywhere else.

I'll try to get another coat of red on tonight, although airbrushing in the evening after work isn't easy. Once that's done, got to mask it up and then on with the Rub'n Buff (at which point, it could all go horribly wrong!)
