I'm afraid I haven't even opened the box of mine yet. I'd like to get the Hurricane GB mostly out of the way first, as I suspect the E-boat is going to take up a lot of room! _________________ Cheers,

Well, I've finally got it out of the stash and I've opened it up to have a look. My, she is a big girl!
My intention is to make the kit more or less OOB, but I shall shamelessly steal any little mods and tips from Dave if I think they look good
No other real progress to report, but I thought I would check in just to let you know what was happening! |

Well, I've started.
I don't have room for the big bits until I've finished the Hurricane GB, but I've started assembling some of the smaller sections - so far, I've made the lifeboats, torpedo tubes and I'm working on the gun platform (tricky little devil!).
Not much, but at least it's underway. _________________ Cheers,

Fairly roaring along now! Almost reached snail's pace!
As I still don't have room for the hull, I've continued with the smaller sub-assemblies. In addition to the lifeboats, I have now completed the torpedo tubes, gun platform (including top-rail), and depth charges. I'll start painting those tonight, and hopefully I should be able to clear the decks (ho! ho!) for the hull in the next couple of days. _________________ Cheers,

Nice to know you are making steady progress. It makes up for the lack of work on my build during the last week.
Don't forget the piccies!

Here's my progress so far - didn't get to do the painting until last night.
As recommended by The Boss, I painted the wooden parts of the liferafts H83 instead of H74. I'm quite pleased with them.

Yes, the gun platform does have wooden slats - the kit has seven rows whereas the real thing had thirteen! I'm almost certain that they were bare wood but after careful consideration I decided to paint the slats on my boat grey anyway.
Dave
* My mistake. The earlier boats had seven rows!

They're certainly grained like wood, but unless I missed a bit, the instructions say they should be painted grey. Would it not be likely that they would paint such a large area, rather than leaving it as natural wood?
edit: And it's hexagonal, not octagonal _________________ Cheers,

I've just found a picture showing the earlier type of gun platform where it has been damaged. It seems to indicate that the wood has been painted grey just like the other slats on the boat. It is certainly not bare or varnished wood.
BTW, I haven't found a single picture that shows the gun platform with the circular edging it! They are all hexagonal - except for when the earliest boats which had a circular covering on the deck itself and not on the cabin roof.
Whatever, it's too late to change now. Mine is a painted hexagonal platform and that is how it is going to remain!

Absolutely - as I'm nearly a month in and have barely started, I think mine is definitely going to be OOB, and there will be no going back to correct minor mistakes! _________________ Cheers,

A bit more progress last night - completed painting the torpedo tubes and depth charges, started painting the box thingies that go on top of the deck (I think that's the right technical term, isn't it?), and started gluing the hull together. Bendy, isn't it?
Pictures later in the week when the hull is together. _________________ Cheers,

The hull is all together now, including the bottom piece which doesn't seem to fit at all well - it has a step almost the whole way around. The two halves of the hull went together with little if any gap between them, so I'm assuming that is just a fit problem. Anyone else find the same thing? _________________ Cheers,

Hi Adrian,
I found that if the bottom of the hull halves is not perfectly flat, that could lead to fit issues with the lower hull section. So, when I glued the hull halves I left them on a flat surface overnight with plenty of weight inside the hull (basically, i filled the hull with two tier of paint tins with some heavy books on the top). This led to a very good fit with the lower hull apart from a slight issue with the bow which was sorted out with a quick tweak of the lower hull.

| I found that the hull fits reasonably well if the deck is in place. |

Oh dear. Expect some gnashing of teeth later on then, when I can't get the deck to fit! _________________ Cheers,

Had a very quick dry fit of the deck before I came into work this morning. It seems to fit (with a bit of gentle persuasion), except for the front which is completely out - the deck is short of the sides by a good 3mm on either side.
I can feel a certain amount of despair creeping in! _________________ Cheers,

Panic over! Managed to remove the wad of Milliput I had applied to the bow to prevent it flexing, and now the deck seems to fit, albeit with the application of a little brute force and ignorance.
I've painted some more bits and bobs tonight, including painting the transparencies that will go inside the hull black, as recommended by the master builder! I have to say it caused a little trepidation, covering (the back of) my lovely clear windows with black paint!
Once the paint has dried, I will attach the transparencies to the hull and then I can fit the deck. Having felt a little despondent, I'm now feeling quite positive - I have something that is starting to look like a boat, and getting rid of the large pieces from the box suddenly makes it all look a little more manageable. _________________ Cheers,
