This weeks featured kit is one of Airfix's Classic ships, Scott's ship 'Discovery'.

(BAC)

Here's what it says in the History section,

Discovery                      905/09255-5/09255
1/144 scale. Available from 1969 to 1977. Reissued in 1980 and from 1988 to 2001.
R Humm

There isn't too much to say about this kit, but I don't think I've ever seen one built up. The moldings look crisp with many lifeboats, deck houses and masts to build, a bit like the Cutty Sark but with a funnel!

Here's some sprue shots,

Although on the side of the box it says 'Figures not included' that isn't quite true. You do get a couple of dog sled teams with drivers.
Neat!

Here's the instructions.

These instructions show you to use old style rubbery Shrouds that were preformed at the factory, but in the later box (like mine) they're not included. Instead it comes with the Heller rigging tool, a reel of thread (one is never enough) and a set of instructions on how to make the shrouds.

I might have a bash with this kit next year, but have you ever made one?

Cheers

Oh, a really doggy kit !
Given the availability details, I wonder if it was ever available in T4, T5 and/or T6 boxings (which a 1980 re-release would indicate). I can only remember seeing T3 and the late 80s white boxes.

I've been on the real one many times but I've never built the kit!

I have seen a couple of these. They really are something great to look at when it is all rigged and finished.

Got one for a friend for Christmas, as he wanted to display it alongside a 1/144 Discovery space shuttle, which I gave him the previous year. He hasn't built either...

When I was a young lad I went on the real one, in those days it was on the Thames.

I did have the kit but oddly enough never built it I wonder what happened to it Perhaps it is up in the Parent's loft.

I really like the your idea of posting the spurs AND instruction sheets.  It would help you make up your mind on a potential purchase.

I have two of these and will build at least one at some stage. It will slightly make up for the fact that I am no longer in reach of the real thing. Taking her to Dundee never made much sense to me, given that she was so appallingly put together by the shipbuilders that she had to be extensively rebuilt before setting off for Antartica - hardly something for the shipyard to be proud of! Basing her at the Isle of Wight would have made more sense if she had to be moved at all, or possibly Woolverstone (she flew the flag of the Royal Harwich yacht club).

Still, apologies for the OT - seeing the 'featured build' inspires me to dust the kit off and start gluing.

Yes, it may be time for an extra-long 'Classic Ship' build. Trouble is, I'd want to build my Revell 'Ghost Shipp' AhARrr !

Right, that's it! I demand you read 'Captain Scott' by Ranulph Fiennes, 'The Worst Journey in the World' by Apsley Cherry-Garrard, 'Scott's last Expedition' by Robert Falcon Scott and 'Hell with a Capital H' by Katherine Lambert before doing anything else!

Classic Ships GB though - not a bad idea.

Andrew at the wheel of Discovery a couple of weeks ago:

The Discovery Point exhibition is fantastic, well worth visiting if you get the chance.
