Back to planes this week and another look at a kit that's been modified during it's lifetime.

The OV-10 Bronco. Another Airfix 'Forgotton prop'?

Here's what the history says about the original NA OV-10A
North American OV-10A Bronco   265/02035-2
1/72 scale. Available from 1969 to 1978. Reissued in 1980. Retooled to 02074 in 1983. Also issued by USAirfix as kit number 20030 (1980?).

The later Rockwell OV-10D
Rockwell OV-10D Bronco 9 02074/02074
1/72 scale. Retool of 265. Available from 1983 to 1988. Also issued by MPC (USA) as kit number 1-4110 (early 1980s).
R.Humm

The earlier issue had a sales life twice that of the modified tool.

But what's the difference?

These parts are the same.

So are these.

No changes to the wings, but the later (grey) fuselage has been extended and what looks like some sort of radar under the chin.

These are some subtle differences to the underwing stores and a few other bits and bobs.

The decals and clear parts.

The earler instruction sheet only had two expoded views and a very basic paint scheme instruction.

The later ones are more what we're used to today.

It's been 20 years since this was out.

Worth a reissue?

Cheers!

I love the Bronco - really good looking aeroplane.  I think I've got one of these in the stash somewhere, but I'm not sure if I've ever built one before.  Might have to dig it out!

Great kit - a shame that I never built one. An ommission I should rectify some day !
The thing under the chin should be a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) pod. IMHO definitely a kit that should be reissued. Even considering that sales were not quite what Humbrol expected back then, 20 years break should ensure that there's some kind of market. Especially the D often fetches rather high prices at bay.

It's an infra red system that was labeled NOGS - Night Observation Gunship System. I think the model depicts the prototype YOV-10D configuration and may not be representative of the final configuration OV-10D. These machines served in Gulf War I so a release with an appropriate scheme might not be amiss, even if Academy already have their own version available. Personally I'd rather have the earlier 'Nam era mouldings.

I think Humbrol inherited this later tooling - wasn't it modified at Palitoy's behest?

Built this as a spotty teenager...wish I still had it in one piece !!
Great looking aircraft and one I would also love to see re-issued.

I have the later version in my stash. I will get round to building the camouflaged prototype as shown on the box art one day.

That's the correct designation, I think it's mentioned in the instructions somewhere. Is it IR-based or some kind of LLLTV ?

But most likely we won't, as...

that's right, it was released by Humbrol in a box using the Palitoy photo but IIRC with a "red frame" end not the "blue panel"...

yes again, that's why we probably won't see the kit as an A again, as apparently Palitoy was wise enough to convert the actual mould were possible (though here, due to the longer nose, this may not have been physically possible...but then probably the "useless" parts were discarded).

one of those kits i always wanted, but suspect that it is of the raised panel lines/empty cockpit type.

sorry but if i get a Bronco it will probably be the Academy unless there is something drastically amiss with that kit and the Airfix is better?
