Did Airfix do a custom kit using the Lotus Cortina Mk1 body as well at about the same time as the Zodiac?
If so did they retool the bodywork in any way?

Unfortunately yes to both questions. As a classic re-release I'm sure the Cortina would be very sale-able, but the tooling was butchered to turn it into a custom car.

I have an old Lotus Cortina kit that I tried (unwisely) to customise way back in the 60's when my modelling skills were shall we say a bit lacking! Some bits are missing, but not any that I cannot make from scratch. I butchered the body a bit and its taking some time to restore it to its original shape. Its getting there albeit slowly. Alternatively, I had thought about buying a Scalextric Lotus Cortina to nick the body from.
I guessed that Airfix had done something to the body in the customised kit.

Sclaextric have a Mk1 Cortina, so technically, using that shell they can make a chassis and interior and have Airfix sell that as a kit... All owned by Hornby anyway, so cross-tooling shouldn't be much of an issue.
