This isn't so much of a suggestion, more like asking for a ruling. Airfix produced so little in the way of Sci-Fi kits, that having an Airfix Sci-Fi GB is (more or less) impossible as Airfix boxed kits are hard to come by. Would be possible to be allowed to build kits irrispective of the manufacturer as long as the kit once came in an Airfix box (I'm thinking AMT/ERTL and MPC here)?

Hi Spudgun, that ruling has already been made.

I quote from the Types of Group Builds section of the GB Rules:

"*Airfix - note that where Airfix have reboxed other manufacturer's kits, such as the Heller 1/400 ships for example, you can make the original Heller kits as well. "

I only used Heller as an example but this does apply to AMT/ERTL and MPC space kits - and for that matter Rosebud, Italeri and anybody else who Airfix have released their kits under the Airfix label. It also includes Dapol who took over some Airfix kits and now produce under their own label.

In the spirit of many 80's sci-fi shows, how about a 'what-if' build, taking any Airfix kit (or kits) as a starting point and turning it into something that might appear in, say, Space 1999?

I've kinda had that idea (along with many others). I thought about taking the Airfix Starcruiser 1 and turning it into the Superswift from the Space:1999 episode Bringers of Wonder. Oddly enough, Starcruiser 1 is referred to within Space:1999 fandom as the Superswift.

I would be up for a space "what-if" too - even though I don't have any space models! As we have three people interested, then we can poll the members to get an idea as to when it takes place.

Adrian, you will be Group Build Leader seeing as you nominated the subject! You will be responsible for setting up the poll. Something along the lines of:

Would you be interested in a Space "What-if" GB?
Yes, in the next three months
Yes, in the next six months
Yes, but later than six months
No

Run it for two weeks and see what occurs!

D'oh! I forgot about the 'nominate & lead' thing

Anyway, I wasn't necessarily thinking of taking an existing space model and turning it into something else, as Spudgun suggested. More like taking say, an F104 Starfighter, adding wings on the top and bottom of the fuselage and hey presto, it's a rocket! That's a fairly simple example, seeing as the Starfighter was more or less a rocket anyway, but you get the idea.

I'll set up the poll.

That's the way it goes! You come up with the good ideas and you get lumbered!

I was thinking of making something like Red Dwarf - a big ugly box with lots of bits stuck over it! I don't think I'll go as far as having a light bulb for an engine though.

As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the first Moon landing I was wondering if anyone would consider a Lunar Module/Saturn V GB?

If the 1/72 kit of the lander is available, I'd be very interested in this idea.

For what it's worth & all the best

I have a slightly started Lunar lander.
I know it's cheating, but would it be OK to use?

Airfix are reissuing the 1/144 Saturn V as a modified tool this year (hopefully with the CSM diameter corrected). They are also issuing a 1/72 diorama set, which presumably includes the 1/72 Lunar Module.

TimJ, as you made the proposal, would you like to become the GB Leader for this?

WooYay!

I would suggest that we schedule any future GB for after the rerelease!

Just a thought, all the best

Yes, I'd be willing to give it a go. I'll have to read up on what I have to do.
