I don't care what goes on elsewhere. If I did, then we probably would never have a GB on anything as most subjects have been covered by other web sites! There is already a Falklands GB on ARC, one about to start on Greger's and no doubt quite a few in other places too. I have no problem with a Falklands GB here. However, you must remember that we are restricted to Airfix kits only for GBs once again.

Don't forget ships (County class, Type 21 and Fearless) and the CVR(T) too..

Well, I'm hardly likely to do that - being ex-RN!

You mustn't forget two other rather important ships either - Canberra and QE2.

I can remember discussing a possible Falklands GB months and months ago on the Airfix.com site. There was a massive list of hardware used by the forces on both sides and a lot of it was covered by Airfix too. I think I have some of that list on my PC somewhere. Perhaps I should try and find it!

I knows it I was sort of replying to farmroad38s posting but it wouldn't have made as much sense quoting it.

Would be an opportunity for me to have a go at the Fearless as for some reason it's one of the few Airfix ships I never tackled back in the day. Perhaps I should have paid more attention when I was at the festival of the sea in Portsmouth back in 1999. Both Fearless and Intrepid were there in refit.

Whatever, we can get a Falklands vote underway - as long as somebody wants to be Group Build Leader.... It won't take place for many months though as there is a queue in the List of Group Build Nominations that will take precedence.

One of the reasons I mentioned a falklands build was for variety, as Aircraft, Ship, armour and figure builders could all take part and it would be interesting to see what people may choose to build. I know it won't take place for a while as there are loads of group builds so it can wait a while, I'm in no rush.

It's good to see that people are interested in a Falklands build, Sorry for suggesting a Harrier Build when you've just finished one Richard but you could always build another.

If people are interested in doing either of these group builds I don't mind being group build leader. Not something I've donme before but I'd be up for the challenge.

I have found the list of hardware used in the Falklands War by both sides and which can be modelled using Airfix kits.

UK

LPDS
HMS Fearless
HMS Intrepid

County Class Destroyers (Batch II Exocet)
HMS Antrim
HMS Glamorgan

Type 21 Frigates
HMS Arrow
HMS Ardent
HMS Antelope
HMS Avenger
HMS Alacrity
HMS Ambuscade
HMS Active

Leander Class Frigates (Exocet)
HMS Argonaut
HMS Penelope
HMS Minerva

Leander Class Frigates (Broad-Beamed SeaWolf)
HMS Andromeda

Civilian Ships
Canberra
QE2

Sea Harrier FRS1
Harrier GR3
Phantom FGR2 (AI)

Westland Sea King Mk 2
Westland Sea King Mk 4
Westland Sea King Mk 5
Westland Sea King HAR3 (AI)
Westland Navy Lynx HAS2
Westland Army Lynx
Westland Scout
Aerospatiale Gazelle
Boeing Chinook HC1
Boeing Chinook HC1 (AI)

C-130 Hercules
Vulcan B2
Nimrod MR1
Nimrod MR2
Nimrod R1
Victor K2 Tanker
VC-10 (AI)

Scorpion Light Tank
Scimitar Light Tank
FV106 Samson Recovery Vehicle (Conversion of Scorpion)
105mm Light Gun

Argentina

Super Entendard
Mirage IIIC/E/EA & Dagger A
A-4 Skyhawk (B, C and Q)
Pucara
C-130E Hercules
KC-130H Hercules
Canberra B62 (ex-B2s)
Boeing 707
Aerospatiale Puma SA.330L
Navy Lynx HAS.23
Short Skyvan
Boeing Chinook CH-47C

As you can see, there is plenty of scope for a Falklands War GB - just as long as we don't all build Harriers!

Thnks for that! To be honest Stu, there are probably a few bits of hardware missing off that list. I am hoping that people like you can help fill in the gaps.

Dave

EDIT: Just checked up on the FA2 and it didn't enter service until 1993 - way too late for the Falklands War.

Ayup Dave...

I'm NO expert believe you me...

With the amount of reference books i have, i should be. But listening to people like yourself and others like Richard Humm on Kitography, for instance, I'm a first year !

Yes, but I bet you know more about wingy things than me. Floaty, wet, warships may be a different matter though!

I'm glad you had modelled by airfix in the post! I thought for a minute you had forgotten the most important vessels sent down there, the boats of SM1,2 and 3

Mick

getting the channels, it's getting off the boat time on wednesday.

Perhaps the reality of a Falklands Group Build is now a step closer due to the rumours/news of Airfix bringing out a Falklands Giftset?

The list of Falklands aircraft includes Sea Harrier, Harrier GR.3, Gazelle, Puma, Super Etendard, Pucara and Mirage/Dagger. Some of the kits will be from the Airfix tooling, others bought in from other manufacturers. All aircraft are 1/72.

There is already a Falklands Warships set. Just a shame they could not have re-released the Canberra to go with it.

I wonder what Pucara it is that Airfix would have bought in? As far as I'm aware, the only 1/72 Pucara is the Special Hobby one.

Here's an interesting question: only Airfix kits would be allowed in the Falklands GB, but if Airfix are reboxing the Special Hobby Pucara and I have the original boxing, would I be able to build it?

If you pay me enough I will probably say "yes"!

The same applies to other kits that were reboxed by Airfix too, such as the Heller 1/400 ships, Rapide, Connie.

There's also a plastic one by the Russian company Voka Gran

Voka Gran

who make an SA-2 as well. Maybe Airfix could licence it to replace the mould that went AWOL.

Ah, that one might be more likely, as the Special Hobby has resin and photoetch parts and is relatively expensive.

The Pucara and Sea Harrier may actually be an Airfix moulds - remember we don't know what was on the stocks for 2007 release and the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War may have been a good hook to hang these kits on. Alternatively a rebox of the very nice Italeri Sea Harrier would be fine for me!

Presumably the Etendard and Mirage/Dagger will be based on the rather nice Heller kits.

Wouldn't they have made more fuss about it if they had new moulds ready? They certainly weren't slow to release details of the Canberras and Lifeboat well before the moulds were available.
