Righto... following a weekend of rugby, and motor racing a visit to the Sheffield Triples show, work on my allotment and a committee meeting ... I have finally managed to get started.
This is only my second build since getting back into modelling so I am hoping to try lots of different techniques out throughout the build. The GR3 kit is quite old so I am referring to my 1/24 GR3 kit instructions for colour references and to the Osprey Falkland’s war book 3. I am saving my 1/24th kit for later when I am more experienced.
Sorting through my paints today I didn’t realise how much “satin” paint is used on modern jets! Not having a huge range of satin colours I have gone for Hu 140 for the cockpit area with the pilot in Hu 155 then dry brushed with Hu 86 , Hu33 for the boots and Hu 159 for the helmet GW bronzed flesh and the main jet intake is in Hu56 / Hu33. The seat is in Hu33 with cushions in kaki drab.
Pictures when the camera batteries have charged up.

| I'm building the same kit (eventually). I was surprised by how good the pilot figure is.. not badly molded at all. |

Progress this week.
I have assembled the main fuselage and wings. Putting filler on the joins came as a bit of a shock. It dried faster than I expected. Maybe its the composition they use these days or I am getting slower in my old age!
After much sanding and cussing I have cleaned up the filler and applied a light coat of white. To show up where else I need to work on it.
I have decied to go with drop tanks and 250lb? bombs(the smaller bombs) as I don't like the moulding on the rocket pods.
Once the paint has dried and I have sanded the filler down yet again i'll get on with the rest of the build.

Hi all,
On Sunday having finished the assembly I moved onto painting and applied the first coat of Grey. I had to fill some very nasty gaps along the bottom of the fuselage first though.
Originally I had planned to give the model bombs, 2x 30mm cannon and drop tanks as a weapon fit. But having read Ratch's comments about weapon loads I am now going with rocket pods on the outside pylons because I still want to have two cannon on the model. If I put enough work/filler into the rocket pods they should be ok.
I had already fitted the undercarriage doors when that subject came up so I am staying with the layout described in the kit and claiming that the aircraft is powered down.
More pics when I have done some more painting.

After a brief hiatus due to working on my allotments I got back into it this weekend. I have completed the painting and have applied a coat of “clear”. It’s the first time I have tried clear and it looks pretty good stuff. I have dipped the canopy in clear and it’s made a huge difference to the apparent clarity of the plastic. This week I intend to get the decals sorted.

Almost finished now… Last weekend I completed the decals. I was a bit worried about these because they were so old the clear part of decal had yellowed quite badly, see photo. When they are on the model, they look ok though. I have had two attempts at painting the canopy! Neither of which I was happy with. The latest plan is to try masking tape. I hope to complete the model this weekend.

Well I almost finished in time! I just needed to apply a coat of dullcoat. Which will go on tonight.
Lessons learned in this build.
1. Ensure that I have all the paints I need before the build starts.
2. Try to avoid using old decals that don’t stick and are horribly yellowed
3. Practice a bit more on canopy framing! I think next time I will try rub down transfers.
4. Avoid group builds starting in April when I have too many other commitments.
Overall, I still had fun though!
I'll post Gallery pics when i have applied the Dullcoat and took better pics.
