This is the Round 2 re-release of the old 1960's Hawk kit of the Vanguard Satellite. It has a transparent top and bottom to allow you to see all the "detail" inside. This detail consist of the central instrument package. This piece looks more like the dematerialization circuit from the Tardis than an instrument package, but in fact, according to photos on the web, it does indeed look like the real thing. In these days, there were no printed circuits or switches, it was all wire and mechanical components. That's why the interior looks sort of empty. In real life all that space was taken up with wires and transistors and such. It's an educational model, so the decals mainly consist of labeling the various parts. The model itself isn't patterned after any one real Vanguard satellite (there were five), but rather looks more like the original conceptual drawings. The molds are old and there are a lot of mold seams and the two halves of the main sphere are out of round with each other, so it takes a bid of doing to get them mated and the seam filled. However, when completed, it makes an interesting desk model of one of the earliest space vehicles.

This is the "front" of the model

The "side" Looks a lot like the "front", eh?
