I have a Stirling, Halifax and Sunderland in the stash. Not sure which to build, I don't have any real preference. I am probably going to wait and see what everyone else does then fill in any gaps, or do the least popular choice (which will probably be the Sunderland!).

I've decided to do the Stirling. This is an old kit I got from Kingkit, the decals are pretty much unusable, but I scanned them and printed out new cleaned up ones.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them, I won't call them sprue shots as there is precious little left on the actual sprues! Most of the major parts are there, but I'm going to have to do a careful part count to make sure nothing else is missing. I've already noticed that two of the props have shed a blade.

Lots of rivet detail on black plastic, but these are recessed, almost as if they were made by a pin. Sanding down the wings, which I will need to do as there are a few sink marks, should reduce the rivets but still leave them visible.

Bombs galore! The trolley is nice too!

Here's the pics of the bits and pieces, not sure which style but it must be old. The price tage on the side of the box says Heraud 11/6.

They don't do instructions like that anymore! Still haven't done a part count.

Not the blue specified in the instructions

Been through the bits and it seems everything is there. I was a bit hampered by the fact that the sprues aren't numbered even though the instructions have numbered parts.

Better crack on, can't have the GB leader slacking!

Ratch - in your colour listing in your review you suggest 29. The photo looks more green to me. What do you think is the best match?

If you like a greener khaki then Hu: 159 Khaki Drab might be the way to go Personally, I'm happy with Hu: 29 although Hu: 26 Khaki is another possibilty

Apparently the design of the Stirling, whose fuselage was longer than its wingspan, was determined by the width of 1930s RAF hangars. They had 100-foot doors and so the Stirling had to have 99-foot wings. Operationally this meant that its ceiling was lower than that of the Halifax or Lancaster.

I guess they had widened the hangars by then.

Thanks Ratch

I'll continue with the 29. I trust your judgement.

I don't think the wife will allow another 250 km drive to get paints.

Meanwhile the build continues!

Just to prove I'm actually doing something, here's a couple of shots;

My wife wonders why she can never find any clothes pegs!

Cockpit is together along with the gunner blobs, couldn't be bothered to scratchbuild gun mounts etc so the crew will be in.

The crew must be superhuman to be able to reach the control columns and actualy move the massive things!

Just got to check the interior colours and the crew uniforms before carrying on.

I was hoping you were going to scratch build a fully functional interior and then I could copy the easy bits.

Was there much warp in the wings? I've had mine under a book for a few days to straighten them out.

ROTFL If I start down that route it will take me forever to finish! First big 4 engine aircraft I've done in an age, maybe the next one. Plus I don't have a single Stirling reference book.

Not really, there was a slight bit of distance at one end of one set but nothing glueing couldn't hold on it's own. My kit is probably 30 years old, so maybe it got worse with subsequent moldings over the years.

I've decided to do the interior Hu78 interior green, this may not be correct, but I don't particulary mind. The green will bring a bit of light to the interior which would otherwise disappear into blackness. First couple of coats are on, once the second is dry I'll start on the seats and crew.

Progress continues at a sedate pace. I'm almost done with the figures (they're further along than in the picture), just got to put a spot of H11 on the goggles and touch up some other bits and pieces. Once that's done I can close up the fuselage.

I've epoxied in the windows in the front, the rest I'll do with with Clearfix after painting.

Crew are finished so I can glue all the internals in place, finally seem like I'm getting somewhere. (Yes, that is Hu96 ).

I'm glad it isn't just me who has got distracted. I'm at about the same point as you.

The photos that I've put in the reference section have only served to delay me further as I ponder repainting to match their colour schemes.

Then again, I'm not sure why we fuss over the colour of the crew as they still look like gargoyles regardless.

Quite! Plus you're not going to see them through the goldfish bowl transparencies anyway!

Crew at their stations!

A touch of Hu78 in places to cover up some glue and missed areas, luckily I found the part 35 pitot tube and remembered to put it in before glueing everything together.

Went together very nicely with no gaps and not a lot of persuasion. Once it's dry I'll see how much work the seams need, I'll probably try the cyano method out on this one.
