Everything in the reviews told me not to buy this one, but I was in Phantom relapse at the time so was overcome by temptation when I saw it in a model shop about a year ago. Besides, I have built a fair range of RN aircraft and it was a gap that had to be filled. I'm sure the reviews were right, but I don't care, because I still enjoyed building it. With such a dreadful review, I felt there was nothing to lose, so I did a bit of opening, cutting and drooping to add a bit more interest and to accentuate the already angular shapes. I am out of Phantom relapse at the moment, though that blue one is getting to me.

Nicely done Gerry

I like the touch of the cut wing tips, I know thats not standard on the Matchbox kits. I was tempted to do my canopies open as well, but the cockpit is so lacking in detail, and the original matchbox seats are nothing to write home about either!

I will at some point be doing one with the canopies open, but I'll invest in some desent resin seats and scratchbuild some detial in to the cockpit as well. Yep I've read the reviews on the matchbox kit and yes I agree the canopy is not quite right, but I think we have both proved they can make nice models it just need a bit of work.

The big down side of the Matchbox kit, is it lack of decent decals, the ones in my kits were as good as useless, and I know both of my Phantoms have greatly been improved by the addition of aftermarket decals. up to now I've never been a lover of stencil on 1/72 scale models, but it is worth the effort of putting them on, even though both my Phantoms took hours to decal. I Also had to buy another Xtradecal phantom sheet, just to get the white no steps for my grey phantom.

http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=X00472&PIC_NO=1

it's worth the investment of a couple of quid for the affect, specially as you get two sets which halfs the cost. and already having this sheet, it now means I've got a spare just incase one goes pearshapped.

Anyway lovely model and well done, I hope my RN one turns out as good when I get round to it!

Got this model from MFS a few weeks back. Last built it back in the late 70's have always felt it could do with a little help from the resin/PE industry particularly as regards the interior but externally it is a very good replica .
Looking forward to building it again as I have a number of other Phantoms from 1/72 to 1/32 in the stash. Hats off to you Gerry thats one handsome aircraft. Keep up the good work

It's very nice & kinda makes me feel sad that I made the decision to part with my Fujimi 1/72nd RN Phantom Yellowbird on ebay last year. After 11 years of sitting on a shelf gathering dust, I Let it go :(

Am so hoping that Revell release a 1/48th RN Phantom at some point. It's my preferred scale for Phantoms.

should have kept that one . I've built several of the Fujimi F-4's and they are very nice kits . I especially liked the seperate rubber tires since i hate trying to get a good seperation when painting them

Hi

Glad you've posted this, I've just started this same kit. Is there anything in particular that caused you any bother? I'm making it along side the Fujimi Alcock and Brown version and am hoping that they will turn out to look not too dis-similar to each other.

Mark

Hi Mark  :D
It was quite a while ago that I built this ,but I cant remember anything to worry about.
As far as im aware the Fujimi kits are far superior, the canopy shape on the Matchbox kit is wrong, you will have no probs with your A+B F4 , stunning decals !!
Might just get meself one  :D

Ps have you posted or are you going to post pics of your build ?? Looking forward to seeing some if you are

Cheers  Andy

Hi Andy

I hadn't thought about it, but I guess I could. My own mini-group of one-build.

Can't promise much of a show case build, haven't faired too well with recently logged builds on the forum.

Do have some new additions to the portfolio later this week though.

Mark

Ayup Gerry...

Lovely Mc Toom...

To the 'Toom Army (!) out there, on Gerry's build, is the front leg at full extension because it's meant to be going up a ski ramp or somesuch ?

Heres my Phantom . Its another of my rescues of old kits . I used Esci tanks and pylons , Aeroclub   wheels  and seats with pull handles added made with the ends cut from sew on  bra clasps .I used decals from an old Modeldecal sheet with some stencilling from an Xtradecal sheet . I didn't think this bird would be armed to the teeth so I added a single sidewinder . The blue is  automotive paint ford engine  blue  . It looks a little brighter than it really is from the flash .
