948 years ago, in 1066, a certain Duke William of Normandy took on Harold Godwinson in battle near the town of Hastings in East Sussex. After a hard battle fought all day, in which William came close to losing twice, he eventually won and Harold died in battle.

25th October 1415, St Crispin's Day, Henry 5th of England with a host of approximately 6000 to 8000 defeated a combined French/Burgundian/Brabant/Briton host of around 15,000 to 30,000
[the size of the hosts is always under consideration and argument]

[I was away all day on 25th so didn't manage to post this till the 26th]

PS; Its urban mythology that the British V finger sign comes from archers during the 100 years war. I have seen an illustration of it which pre-dates the wars.

1st November 1914 saw the first naval battle of WWI the battle of Coronel. This took place of the coast of Chile where a German squadron was disrupting British merchant shipping.
The German ships were more modern, faster and with longer range guns than the aged British cruisers ordered to attack them. Two British ships were sunk with the loss of over 1,600 lives. Not one German life was lost. It was the first defeat for the Royal Navy in 100 years.

Highly recommended is "Castles of Steel" by Robert K. Massie which is a history of the great war at sea.

Admiral John Benbow, died 4th November 1702 after an action against the French in the Caribbean when his accompanying captains showed a distinct lack of backbone:

Today, events are being held across the UK to mark one of the most iconic moments of World War I, the 1914 Christmas Truce football match.

100 years ago today, Scarborough, Whitby and The Hartlepools were bombarded by the German Navy.

Lest we forget.

is Winnie the Pooh Day!
Now have lots of hunny on your toast and go out to your nearest stream and play Pooh Sticks.

Which character do you most resemble ?
Sometimes I'm like Roo, sometimes like Tigger.

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

There's a coincidence I saw this photo of the real Christopher Robin with Pooh earlier today. http://www.neatorama.com/2012/07/17/the ... her-robin/

I have my Eeyore moments.

On this day in 1915 the first air raid on mainland UK took place.
Zeppelins L3 and L4 dropped bombs on Great Yarmouth, Kings Lynn and other locations in Norfolk.

is Democracy Day. To commemorate the 750th anniversary of the first parliament called with elected representatives from every shire and town. Called by the usurper Simon de Montfort in the name of Henry III. The form of this parliament set the path to the one we know today, and was copied by other nations.
A relief carving of de Montfort graces the the US House of Representatives in Washington.

20th January 1959 was also the day on which the Vickers Vanguard first flew.
