Ayup Bruv...
Don't want to hurry you or anything, but there's roughly 5 days to go.
I take it this is a non-starter. No worries if not. You just owe me a (nother) pint if you come to Hendon... _________________ Airfix Member 022... Jolly Boy.

I am hoping to get started on this tonight (finally), I will be building the 1/48th scale Seafire. As the cockpit and pilot are the first items up on the instructions I have one quick question...would Royal Navy pilots wear their Navy blue uniforms while flying or would they wear some type of overall?
Any suggestions will be willingly received.
Cheers

Originally FAA pilots bought RAF battledress and had them dyed as this was far more comfortable that the pre-war all-in-one suits.
Later this was made up in a more fitting Naval colour once their Lordships pulled their fingers out.
Of course uniform variations abound as in all the flying services depending on operational theatre. _________________ Bubbly! |

Thanks for that, I think I will go for a Navy Blue number, a little change to seeing pilots in Airforce Blue.

Depending on the theatre of operations, time of year and in fact what year of the war you are depicting, aircrew clothing seemed to be a general mish-mash.
A one-piece Sidcot suit would be as applicable as would an Irvin jacket with a submariners white roll neck sweater.
I have photographs of RAF aircrew wearing an assortment of mixed service clothing and various types of helmet/goggles/mask combination as well as wearing shoes, flying boots and even wellington boots.
The choices are limitless and no one combination of clothing/equipment can be classed as wrong (unless you depict later issued equipment on an earlier themed model) _________________ BAGGY |

I have now painted and assembled most of the cockpit elements, will paint the pilot tonight. Have also cut out the fuselage sections for the arrestor hook assembly to fit in. will attempt to post some pictures later.

Finally uploaded some pictures so here is an update as promised.
Here is the cockpit assembly slotted in place, not the greatest paint job but you cannot see most of it once the fuselage is together
The pilot figure, I decided to go with the Navy uniform although he looks a little bit like he is dressed in shiny black leather in these pictures , strange as I gave him a couple of coats of matt varnish before taking these pictures.
Oddly enough the varnish had a strange reaction to a portion of his parachute harness/ top of his socks turning it day-glo purple, you can just see it in the picture above. I guess some sort of reaction between the navy blue paint and the varnish
Here he is in his new home
Not sure if others have had this problem but I clearly made a bodge of cutting out the area for the arrester hook, a little bit of filler required here
The fuselage halfs together and prop in place, whizzing along now
The wing being test fitted, do not seem too bad.
I am currently doing a bit of filling, guess where will try to post some more pictures later.
Cheers

Thanks chaps
Here is another update
Initial filling of the large gaps around the arrester hook recess
The wings in place, a little filler needed around the wing root
More filler around the underside wing joins and it was evident that a small shim of plastic would be needed to fill the gap at the front end of the arrester hook area
Here the shim is in place and more filling has been done
A couple of poictures showing the cockpit in place and a little filler required around the joins
Most fittings on, cockpit masked and camouflage demarcation lines penciled on.
Camouflage painting started
Cheers

Coming on Leaps and Bounds mate. Good stuff.
It's a pity you weren't building it in the Clipped wing option. I think they look Wicked ! _________________ Airfix Member 022... Jolly Boy.

Managed to get some extra dark sea grey paint from my Father's collection at the weekend (could not get any locally for some reason ) so painted the darker camouflage areas last night, this has made the lighter grey look too light so I may have to give that a coat of something else.
I have tomorrow afternoon off so a visit to Model Zone will be in order .
As soon as I have sorted the upper camouflage problem it should be plain sailing to get this one finished.
Cheers
