I may not have achieved very much on day 1 - after a whole day of refreeing the Dorset U12's rugby cup all I really wanted to do was sleep - but at least I managed to get a little done last night, even if it was simply applying a coat of undercoat to everything and considering the changes that will need to be made.
I'm using one of the two limited edition Airfix Club Jetstreams that I acquired about 3 years ago to make a T2 variant used by 750 Sqn. I've decided to do the actual aircaft in which I flew my Final Air Test in October 1985 - the exact airframe for which escapes me but it's recorded in my log book in the loft. I don't really need that until the decal stage anyway as in 1985 all the T2s were ostensibly the same.
I was interested to see that the fuselage and some of the sprues have raised panel lines, whereas the wings have engraved panel lines. Almost as if they were retooled for the 2005/6 limited edition issue but I can't see that as being likely.
I've got a Pucara from the Falklands set to cannibilise for the Astazu front ends, although may try casting replicas in resin. I had considered using the spare radome from the Sea King HAR 3 that I converted to HC4 status just before Christmas as the MEL 190 nose radome but after offering it up last night it was far too big, so that will be srcatch built from card and milliput.
I was quite surprised to see that there is no floor in the cabin, so that will have to be scratch built from card as well as I want to model at least the rear of the two training consoles so that it is visible from the open rear door. And of course I shall have to modify the door itself to get rid of that cargo door. the interior partitions need moving, in the case of the rear bulkhead, and losing in the case of the one just forward of the cargo door.
I also need to modify the bulkhead at the rear of the cocpit to allow for a path through from the cabin and to detail the insiode of the cockpit. I shan't do too much in there as there's not a lot of glass to look through to see it!
I need two extra small windows above the cockpit either side and need to move the window in the cargo door forward by about 5mm. And I need to slightly modify the main undercarriage but as far as I can see that simply involves losing the main wheel doors and making a small adjustment to the tops of the undercarriage leg doors.
Apart from that it will be a straight out of the box build! |

IIRC I had about 90 hours on type before graduating and moving onto Lynx conversion with 702 Sqn. It was a fun aircraft to fly, especially when, with a large notice stuck to the side of the cockpit coaming saying "Not cleared for aerobatic manoeuvres", we barrel rolled one about 3000 feet above St Marys in the Scillies. Of course when I went through 750 Sqn most of the staff were ex Phantom or Buccaneer so had a wealth of FW experience. Sadly four years later one was lost at Portland while displaying so we didn't push the limits of the envelope after that.
As far as the model is concerned, I started to put some of the interior together last night with internal bulkhead revision and the start of the deck. It's going to be an interesting challenge to get the interior to match both fuselage sides and still look level because the deck isn't flat but has a step up on either side. I'm sure it can be done with a bit of patience. |

Yes - but there's not much to see yet! I will certainly take some as the interior starts to come together.
I put the front end of the cargo door on and filled the window in that door as it is too far aft. I've got the fuselage half now marked up to drill the new window aperture which I will hopefully do tomorrow. Having also mated the wing halves previously, I lined the inside of the wheel wells with paper stiffened with superglue so they should be ready for trimming tomorrow. |

Spent most of the past 3 evenings scanning the illustrations of the cockpit layout and training console from the Aircrew Manual so that I can print some decals. I know that they probably won't be seen very clearly, but I know that they're there!
These are the main images, reduced in size from original but still a long way still to be reduced before I print. The main instrument panel is just 22mm wide and the training console 7.6mm wide at the base tapering to 5mm wide at the top.

Well the instrument panel decals will have to wait - went to print them on Tuesday to find the colour printer out of ink.
So I took the time to cut the new window aperture for the fuselage window and while I was at it the two small windows above the cockpit on either side. Alos added some filler to the wheel wells where the pare had left gaps and made up the first of two training consoles to go in the back.
If you look carefully you can just see the outline of where the window originally was in the kit cargo door.
Unfortunately the burr sliped when drilling this so I still need to do a little filling before these are complete.
One of the training consoles on one part of the three part rear cabin floor. |

As some of you may have read in the decals forum, I have had a nightmare recently with the DIY decals and the ink running once I put the Klear on. Of course I need them this early for the internal panels so progress had sort of stalled. However, the good news is that although the ink did run again (even after leaving them for 48 hours) it was only very slightly and I will get away with it.
While I was waiting to rectify this shortfall (as well as spending a few days at RAF Waddington for work last week which somewhat got in the way), I thought I'd tackle the engine nacelles. Taking the engines from the Pucara kit seemed a good idea. Until I tried fitting them:
So, out with the Dremmel, filler and a nail file!
Still a little way to go but nearly there on the engines. And now that the interior decals have dried I can finish off the cockpit/rear crew area. |

Sorry for not updating for a while - work's been fairly manic and we've had a family bereavement this week as well. So over a week with no modelling at all.
But I have now managed to get the interior finished. Although I started off thinking that I would put the full interior in, after I realised how un-transparent the windows were, I have walked back on that and minimised it to those that I think will actually be seen through the fuselage door and cockpit windows.
So with that in mind, the cockpit and one of the two training consoles has been fitted, weights duly added to the nose (and the nose well boxed in) and fuselage halves joined. I suppose it wasn't a bad fit but still needed a modicum of filler and sanding. I also added the wing sub-assembly and prepped the filler in those gaps.
I had consciously left out the deck around the access door so that could be added once the fuselage was assembled so that I could fair it into the door housing. That was simply a small piece of plasticard and a little filler either side.

| Sorry but I'm not going to be complete on time. Although it's now looking like a T2 with radome etc all added made from plasticard wrapped around a small x-acto knife handle with a blob of filler at the front, and the blue stripes added, I've run out of time before I go away on holiday. so next update when I get back in 10 days time. |

Hi Wookie,
I have just won a Jetsteam and M&E conversion set on ebay, and will be building the RAF version. The thimble nose and RN decals are going spare if you want them.

Dear All,
What was the deadline? Mid April? Well I finally finished it mid-September. Does that count!
Life has been manic since my last post and I hardly did any modelling through the summer which then coupled with a period abroad from which i came back with a nasty infection from an insect bite meant that I've only just managed to get it completed. Photos attached. I have to say that I'm really not very happy with it. I think I got towards the end and just wanted it off my model board so rushed the last few stages and spoiled it.
I wish I'd seen rafalbert's offer earlier (thanks - sorry for not responding) as this was my first attempt at printing my own decals and apart from not being able to get the ink to dry before I sealed them, the white numerals and white ring around the fuselage roundels were a nightmare!
Anyway it's there for all to see, poke fun at and tell me what I should have done to get it right! The photos aren't brilliant as I've got a brand new Canon and it's so complex that I'm still coming to terms with it and this was my first attempt at using the macro mode. I'm not sure that I got it right so will have another attempt at trying to get some that are sharper.
Now, what should I do next... I think it's a toss up between a 1/400 Hood, a 1/48 F4-K or my own Lynx from when I was Flight Commander HMS BRAVE. They should keep me out of mischief for 12 months.
