I’m a little confused of what exactly this GB cover (anything UK except RAF? Or naval only? Or other?)
Please enlighten me, I’m not good with English abbreviations or the history of the UK airforce.
But I’m told this Airco DH 4 from the “Vintage aircraft” special edition series, straight from the box should be OK.
So let this be better than the one I have already.
Have a great building time

Ayup Jesper...
The GB covers aircraft used in the Royal Naval Air Squadrons, or in the Fleet Air Arm. that covers a period up to today of over 100 years.
Now, obviously, the SHIP based NAVY probably used most of the types flown in the LAND based RAF, but if you choose one of those, you MUST use the markings used on board SHIP. NOT LAND. so only FAA Markings/ and model-able external modifications to airframes should be done.
If you look in CHAT or REFERENCE for this thread, and follow the linkys, they will tell you which service, (FAA or RNAS) used what aircraft so you can model appropriately. The DH4 was used in the RNAS, for example, but you need to research the correct MARKINGS for your particular aicraft. hope that clears it up ! _________________ Airfix Member 022... Jolly Boy.

Thanks, Feanor.
I have now found a colour drawing of a D.H.4. from No. 5 wing R.N.A.S. Dunkirk summer 1917.
It looks like I can use most of the decals from the kit, with a few modifications.

I found a little more information about the airplane Airfix has as the option in my kit.
Quote from Wikipedia: "The DH.4 was also used for coastal patrols by the RNAS, one, crewed by the pilot Major Egbert Cadbury
and Captain Robert Leckie (later Air Vice-Marshal) as gunner shot down Zeppelin L70 on 5 August 1918"
This will be my option despite some rather off-centre decals.

Feanor - sorry if this is not the place, but I'm slightly confused by your definitions, notably "you MUST use the markings used on board SHIP. NOT LAND"
The RNAS had a large number of purely land-based squadrons during the First World War - in fact most of them were. Flights from ships were restricted to floatplanes operating from a small number of converted liners, and later some aircraft such as Sopwith Strutters and Camels flying from lighters, flying-off decks on warships or, right at the very end of the war, one of the embryonic aircraft carriers. Hangartime's O/400 for example never went near a ship!
There are also plenty of purely land-based FAA aircraft, like the Defiant target tug that is being built, or the Beaufighter that was mentioned. I thought the definition was basically if it's under the Royal Navy, it's in. Otherwise the RAF Merchant Ship Fighter Unit would be in and second line FAA Squadrons (apart from deck landing training)- out.
Clarification please? |

Ayup 923...
This is what stems from me NOT being an RNAS/FAA expert, not that i siad i was...
If your chosen build is land based, then no worries. obviously i have assumed that all FAA aircraft were sea based on ship. As maybe most RNAS aircraft too. I stand corrected. and i'm surprised i wasn't told earlier !
I also learned the other day that FAA Aircraft could sport RAF type camo. so again, apologies to all concerned.
But as a participant, It's left up to each one of you to say what it is, and where the chosen subject comes from...
But i still insist MB-T was an RAF LAND based Beau of 236 Sqn. flying from North Weald. as it is documented and NOT within the remit of this GB. _________________ Airfix Member 022... Jolly Boy.

As far as I got …
Fuselage assembled with lower wing and tail surfaces in place.
Upper wing with struts. All painted with holes drilled for the rigging.
All well up to this point, but I have promised myself to add rigging to make it stand out from the DH4 already on my shelf,
and I simply don’t have the drive to continue at this point.
Don’t be surprised if status in a year will be the same.
I simply shouldn’t have joined this GB in the first place.
Sorry.
All the best from Jesper. _________________ Feel free to visit my Portfolio. |
