I've just received an e-mail from a model shop telling me the re-released Airfix Saturn 1B will be available on the 15th of January 2011.

At last  :D

I would take wonderlandmodels release dates with a sizeable pinch of salt, they change them frequently and are rarely accurate.  At the moment they have 13 Airfix kits listed as 15th January, and I rather suspect they've done that just to avoid any complaints over items not being delivered before Christmas (although the Saturn Ib is a 2011 release anyway).

Yeah sorry to say MartG but MrT is right the Wonderland Models release dates are a bit of a fantasy.  They frequently release not only a month but a day when Airfix themselves are only giving a quater.  Coupled to the fact that as has been seen before that due to the way the shipping containers can get held up on their trips around the world a delivery month or week can be known but a day is unlikely.

Still will be rather happy if it is a Jan release  :D .

The long awaited re-issue of the Airfix Saturn 1B kit has finally happened, with a pair of kits arriving earlier this week. Like the Saturn V the revised Apollo/SLA parts are on a dedicated runner together with the stand, with the original parts deleted. The decal sheet has had minor revisions to include a few camera targets.

Although it's supposed to represent the SA-205 Apollo 7 mission, the first stage still has the skirts around the engines which only flew on SA-201 and the turbopump exhaust fairings which were only present on SA-201 and SA-202. The S-IVB 2nd stage has the two ullage motors as used on the Saturn V S-IVB-500 version, rather than the 3 present on the 1B's S-IVB-200.

The 1st stage H-1 engines supplied are all the same, though on the actual vehicle the inner and outer engines differed in the arrangement of the turbopump exhaust. The outer engines had an annular exhaust around the engine bell, while from SA-203 onwards the inner ones had a duct attached to the engine bell exhausting in the middle between the four engines.

With my 'resin casting' head on I decided to make a few improvements to the kit. First thing I've made is a replacement for the plate at the top of the 1st stage. In the kit this has bumps for the tops of the fuel tanks, but lacks the spider beam and seal plate which went over the top of the tanks.

I'm still working on the 1st stage engines, so watch this space

Another thing I've made is a set of decals for the 1st stage fuel tanks. The white rectangle with United States is supplied in the kit with white backing which isn't quite opaque enough to be applied over black paint, and masking off the white area can be a real pain to get right. I've also included mission numbers for the first two flights on this sheet.

Image

I've also produced the alternative nose fairings used for the SA-203 and SA-204 flights. SA-203 flew without any payload, with the S-IVB being capped with a large fairing.

SA-204 carried the first LM to fly for an unmanned test flight. The SLA was capped by a simple conical fairing

I hope your house move is going OK MartG. I really would like some of your resin as I have one Airfix Saturn 1B in the build line with another 5-6 in the stash....:). So I can see a home for your resin conversions in my future.

Some corrected first stage engines would be absolute gold as well.

I certainly would like one of your all resin 1/96 Saturn 1B's as well, I hope you will be offering those again?

Cheers

Tony

Cheers guys, did not want to hijack MartG's thread but I figure it fitted in, plus I haven't seen any other on-line builds of the re-issued version so far.

Looking forward to picking up a few of his resin bits to do some other Saturn 1B versions as well.....:)

Cheers

Tony

Ditto. I'll have to get my A into G and get one of these.

Here's my work in progress, like my Airfix Saturn V I'm doing it OOB but with a few painting details added. I'm also building the Skylab 1 in parallel.

Great work 4D, shows well how good the kit looks straight from the box with a good job of the paint scheme.

Looks like you have painted the Boost Protective Cover over the capsule silver, it should be white like the Launch Escape System tower above it, but apart from that awesome job.

Cheers

Thanks Tony. The boost cover is white but blame it on the photography. Finished pics will be posted shortly as I "decaled" it up last night but I just want to Klear cote it again and photgraph it, hopefully a little better.  :D
