As some of you will be aware I have been building this up over the last two months. This is one of the aircraft from James Cameron's film 'Avatar' it is a type of helicopter, but it has four sets of rotors housed in two fan ducts, the two sets in each duct contra rotate. The aircraft fills a similar role and is a similar size to a Black hawk helicopter, with is only weapons being two small rocket pods and two triple barrel hydra machine guns - for information on the aircraft in the film see here: http://james-camerons-avatar.wikia.com/ ... A-2_Samson
As there is no model of plans available of this aircraft I first had to draw plans. The model is entirely scratch built (except for five kit parts - a winch on the belly and four rotor hubs - Panzer IV road wheels)  using mainly 40 thou, 20 thou and 5 thou plasticard and also small pieces of spru, plastic rod and lead (for counter weight). for more info on the build see the my scratchbuild thread: about19501.html
The specific aircraft depicted (Samson 16) is the main one in the film flow by Trudie Chacon and used to transport geologists, scientists and Avatars around the planet of Pandora. I have made up a quick diorama base which depicts a small plateau in the Hallelujah Mountains
Anyway here are the pictures:

Stunning! Great build and finish, it's been a pleasure to follow the build process and see the end result  :D .

I must be one of the few people in the western world that hasn't seen Avatar so I have been following your build without a clue as to what it is you were making  but I must say, now that it is done, it looks flipping marvellous  :notworthy:  :notworthy: .

Cheers

That was a truly brilliant build. I have been following it for some time now and the end result is fantastic. :notworthy:

I only wish I had the skill and patience to scratchbuild, you are not constrained to market requirements then.

Well done!!!! Like others who have already posted, I have been following your build. I admire your craftsmanship and skill in making such an excellent model out of 'nothing'. It has been a pleasure to see your progress, and see the model come together. Congratulations again on a most excellent build.  :notworthy:

Regards,

Mark

thanks alot guys, in terms of figures, I did consider it but the only pilot figure I has was not really suitable and if I was to put some 'Avatars'  on there that would probably mean raiding my 1/72 figure spares and going at them with a lighter (to stretch them) - never a good idea.

cheers

Shorty, I too haven't seen the film and missed your build thread so I had to go back and read it.  I couldn't imagine how this could have been built from scratch!

Truly amazing, mate!  Absolutely first class.  And I love the way that you have weathered over the decals.  This bird looks like she's been in action!

Brilliant! Mega respect!

Hi Shorty, I really enjoyed seeing the film (3 times already) and the flight scenes are great. You've really got the shape and look just right there, especially as there have not been any plans issued of it;  well done! The story is that Cameron's designers got the idea from a real aircraft, the X-22A tilt rotor.  I've posted a couple of images to show the concept. Your rotor blades look spot on. great work Shorty

Thanks, Bootneck42! I knew I had seen that kind of rotor sowhere in the distant past! That is one less thing to worry me and keep me awake!

i think they got it from the Halo Hornet, but i dont think the halo inventors noticed... anyway, that is one of the most amazing bits of plastic i have ever seen, and now i am going to learn how to make things from plastic sheets... this forum really is bad for me...

cheers Scorpio, I came across much discussion on gaming forums about the similarity between this and the hornet, and there doesn't appear to be any definite answer.

good to hear from a fellow East Sussexer
