Hi there

I think I started modelling when I was 7 back in the 70’s when my Dad bought me my first Airfix Spitfire 1A in the little plastic bag with the instructions on the header. Since then I have mainly built RAF types with the odd exception.  Once Airfix stopped putting in the little display stand I started getting matchbox kits with the stand. Needless to say most of these early builds were not painted and lasted two weeks at most before been shot down by my brothers X-Wing.

Once old enough to paint and skilful enough to assemble the undercarriage and paint the pilot I went back to Airfix and moved onto the bigger aircraft such as the Wellington, Dakota (still have) and bigger scales.

Alas in 1983 computers came and my modelling interests waned as the offerings from the defunct Airfix and Matchbox ranges were not of sufficient interest for me.
The last two kits I built before an 8-year hiatus were both from Revel. A 1/32 Harrier GR Mk1 and a F-14A Tomcat – superb models of which the Tomcat is still flying in my daughters bedroom.

1991/1992 Was my next attempt at modelling of which an Airfix F-5E and A-4E USN aggressors were built. Both painted but not completed as although brand new the F5 was missing an intake and the A4 its canopy. A Monogram F-20 (1/48) was started, painted but not completed and a 1/32 F- 15E (Revel) half done. They are still in the loft so one day….

A period of great inactivity occurred until November 2007, when I dusted down the modelling skills and re-started building with the added complications of keeping it away from my young daughter and my cat who enjoys eating plastic.

I tend to build out of the box and build to relax. Lack of room means I concentrate solely on the UK’s armed forces and as I get more confident will add resin and photo etched sets, which weren’t around 30 years ago when I started

Pre 2008 and 2008 Builds

Matchbox Lightning FMk6 74 Sq built aged 8-10 around 1979-81. At this point i didn't paint cockpits or build undercarriages.  Drilled a big hole in the Ventral tank and jammed the Matchbox stand through it. The over wing tank lasted for 16 years until the cat payed a visit and where it is no one knows?

Nice builds Tom.  Even without the dates you put in the text I'd have guessed your age from the old science fiction paperbacks in the first pic!

Two more to show you built whilst building the two Airfix Harriers.

Firstly Matchbox Jaguar T2 in ETPS scheme.  The kit is pretty appalling as it is the same length as the single seater!. It is also based on the original 1973 Matchbox jaguar S model so is basically emulating the Jaguar prototypes. It is currently flown by two borrowed Airfix Hawk pilots who at 1/72 are a bit oversized for the reduced scale cockpit. An Airfix stand completes the picture. Decals were over 25 years old but kept together well. Only problem been the transparency of the white roundels and insignia over the darker colours.
Image

Secondly Matchbox Tornado F3 (re released by Revell) If I thought the matchbox Jag was bad then my God was I wrong. If anything went together it was a miracle. cockpit fitted poorly, seats undersized, fuselage was warped and didn't come together, bits of the fin were missing and an albatross had flown through part of the canopy. Many a time it came to binning it but with a spare corgi stand, gallons of Hu21 (from painting Hawks) and spares from a model alliance decal sheet a 43 Sq 2005 Display aircraft was achieved. With it been black all the poorly fitted parts blend in!

A couple of Airfix Harriers for the harrier group build.

A Harrier GR MK 7A of 801NAS (A what if ? aircraft carrying sea eagle missiles loaned from a Hasegawa Sea Harrier) and a Harrier T10 of 800NAS. Its missing its rear canopy.
Both were relatively easy to put together, the only problem been the tight fit of the pilot with the canopy on. The T10s seats were replaced with resin seats.

AIRFIX TORNADO GR MK 1T ZA 541 Airfix Kit 04027
TWCU 1982/83

Image

REF USED:

World Air Power Vol 3
Airplane Part 24
SAM Vol 9 Number 8 May 87

Kit used was the Heller owned re issue (91?) with no up dates since its first 1983 incarnation meaning no new weapons or decals. The tail fin is still based on the MRCA prototype.

The model was built out of a rather crushed box and depicts a Tornado GR MK 1T ZA541 of the TWCU around 1982/1983. The actual aircraft was delivered in 1981 without the laser range finder. Batch 3 Laser equipped Tornados were delivered around mid 83 to both the TWCU and IX Sq (the first operational squadron) so when the laser range finder was retro fitted I don’t know.  From 1984 the TWCU was also designated 45 Reserve Sq with the addition of 45’s sq emblem replacing the RAF roundel underneath the cockpit – the roundels migrating to the air intakes. The Kit only has the decals for the 81-83 periods.
The real aircraft was later converted to GR MK 4 and operated by 31 Sq in Germany and later at RAF Marham.

The Kit went together well. It’s the first Airfix Tornado I’ve built.
As the kit was second hand some of the smaller items had been lost off the sprues with the result that some of the aerials are missing. The pilot tube is also on the small side.
I couldn’t get the canopy closed over the Navs head so that is why it is open. Unfortnately the superglue has fogged the rear of the canopy and my canopy masking at 3am in the morning isn’t the best.
Another error is placing the RAF roundels under the cockpit too high.

Apart from some minor misdemeanours it doesn’t look bad from a couple of metres away!

Airfix Sea Gladiator Mk 1 "Hope" Hal Far Fighter Flight Malta 1940 A01002 2008 Reissue

I cut the pilot out of this. I hadn't built a biplane since the Airfix Hawker Fury 25 years ago so had a bit of a problem attaching the supports from the engine block to the upper wing. fingers are too big now for this sort of thing !
