Split from Tim's Apache thread.

Oh that'd be right! With so many things happening in my life I lose track of things. But why on Earth didn't the search button show it up as already posted? Somebody else mentioned a while ago that this facility is not very efficient and I would have to agree. I mean, I've worded the headings of these two threads almost exactly the same! Are we supposed to keep on trying every possible permutation of the key words in the vague hope that we'll eventually snag the correct one?

Sorry Ratch, which one shall we get rid of?

Try searching for more generic terms Tim.  I searched for 'Apache' and it came up in a relatively short list.  If you use the option in the header, it takes you to the advanced search where you can also limit the search to specific forums rather than the whole site.

I'll remove the other thread and we can leave this one here.

Thanks Adrian. I don't understand what you mean by the 'option in the header' though. All I can see is 'search before you post'.

He means this one in the choices at the top of the page:

Forum Rules :: Moderators :: Portal :: Group Build Calendar :: ATF Web Site
BBCode Help :: FAQ :: Search :: Memberlist :: Usergroups
Profile :: You have no new messages ::(your name here)

And thanks to Adrian, as I had never tried it before.

As Loll said, it's one of the options right at the top of the page, near where you see your message notifications, and highlighted in red here:

When you use it, you get the page shown which gives you more detailed search options.  It also has a Google search option, which might give better 'combined' word searches.

Thanks Adrian. I was dragged screaming and kicking under protest into the 21st Century. Twelve months or so ago I didn't even know how to turn a computer on and there's still a hell of a lot that's way above my head. I don't even own a mobile telephone (don't want one either)!

Cheers,

Tim.

No problem Tim - happy to help, makes me feel wanted

I'm going to split this search stuff off your pictures, as I think it will be useful to others too.

Certainly is - I had no idea tha there eve was an advanced search function. It isn't obvious, is it? I mean, ergonomically, you have two icons each saying "Search". It'd be reasonable to assume that both do the same thing....

Could I suggest that the "Search" icon in the header be changed to read "Advanced Search" in order to reflect its true function?

It would also be very useful if there was an option (in Advanced Search) to search thread "titles only" and not the whole contents as is currently the case.

I'm afraid we can't control what appears in the search - it's provided by the forum hosts.

Now now chaps, you can't expect a computer programme to do what you want it to, that's against the unwritten software laws ....

Unfortunately, the "BBCode Help :: FAQ :: Search :: Memberlist :: Usergroups " part was coded into one parameter and couldn't changed.  However, it can now be altered by some fiddling and I will also change the "Search before you post" bit to indicate that the Advanced Search link at the top of the page should be used for more advanced searches.

Ironically, I originally coded the lower search box in because people weren't using the link at the top of the page......
