Ice Cold In Alex
"Ive got to get Katie to Alex, It's a personal thing!

The Cruel Sea "there;s some men in the water right there"
"well, there's a Uboat right below them"
"Instantanious echo sir!"

633 Sqn "you can't kill a Squadron"

Das Boot.
Who cares which side they were on, by the end of the film you are one of the crew.

Dark Blue World
Just to show what can be done with Battle of Britain film out takes and a bit of CGI.

Theirs is the Glory
The Battle of Arnhem filmed in Arnhem immediately after the war and using the soldiers that were there. Filmed before Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome had been coined. Acting is terrible but the authenticity can't be beaten.

Apocalypse Now
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning etc."

Das Boot
As a lager advert (Becks) its just behind Ice Cold In Alex.

Cross Of Iron
Just think what it would have been like if it had a budget like Saving Private Ryan.

Not necessarily my top 3, but certainly decent films.

1953: The Dambusters

"You say you want a Wellington Bomber, there worth there weight in gold, what possible reason could i give to get you one ?
"If you told them i designed it "

"Well chaps my watch says its time to go . . ."

" . . . di da dit . . . . they've done it, they've got the Eder dam as well

Could they possibly better it with the re-make ??

DAS BOOT

Captain Lehmann-Willenbrock: ‘you have to have good men. Good men, all of them’

Captain Lehmann-Willenbrock: ‘Our patrol planes! Where are they? Answer that one, Herr Goering! The British have plenty of them! talking big is all he’s good for, that fat slob

Lt Werner: ‘They made us all train for this day. ‘To be fearless and proud and alone. To need no one, just sacrifice. All for the Fatherland’ Oh God! All just empty words. It’s not the way they said it was, is it? I just want someone to be with. The only thing I feel is afraid.

DOWNFALL

Adolf Hitler: ‘the war is lost…But if you think I’ll leave Berlin for that, you are sadly mistaken. I’d prefer to put a bullet in my head’

Adolf Hitler: ‘The military has been lying to me. Everybody has been lying to be, even the SS. Our generals are just a bunch of contemptible, disloyal cowards…the scum of the German people! Not a shred of honour!’

A BRIDGE TO FAR

Major General Urquhart: ‘Hancock. I’ve got lunatics laughing at me from the woods. My original plan has been scuppered now that the jeeps haven’t arrived, My communications are completely broken down. Do you really believe any of that can be helped by a cup of tea?
Corporal Hancock: Couldn’t hurt sir.

Field Marshal Model: ‘What can you see?’
GeneraL Ludwig: ‘Nothing, but they’re going to try a river assault’
Field Marshal Model: ‘It will fail’
General Ludwig: ‘Of course…but what do we do if it doesn’t?’

GLORY

"We runaway slaves but we come back fightin' men! Go tell your folks how kingdom come in the year of Jubilee!"

ZULU

"A Zulu regiment can run -- run 50 miles and fight a battle at the end of it!"

TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH

"We've got to try to find out just what a 'maximum effort' is."

Just watched Gettysburg again-

"General Pickett, look to your division"

"General Lee, I have no division".

Well I was going to recommend 'Das Boot' but it seems to be the favourite film here. It shows what good taste ATFers have. 8-)

I assume you're all referring to the original full length TV series. I recommend watching in German with subtitles, if you need them, much more atmospheric. :nailbite:

In Which We Serve.

Sink the Bismarck

Desert Fox and Rats. I know, it's two movies, and they are old, inaccurate and a little corny, but I loved them as a kid and James Mason will always be Rommel to me.

I am actually struggling to think of a good one.

Saving Private Ryan wasn't bad.

I liked Saving Private Ryan first time i saw it, second time round the one dimensional portrayal of the German soldiers started to grate a little.

Going off topic, can i add War Movies you would not recommend? Recently wasted $2 renting 'Company of Heroes', a 2013 straight to video release, which i was dimly hoping might at least have used cgi to workaround the usual pitfalls of low budget war films (small sets, inaccurate uniforms and equipment). Nope. Everything is wrong about it - uniforms, weaponry, battlescenes, explosions, dialogue, plot, characterisations, acting. The only good thing were the T-34s (or one T-34 cgi duplicated). Except it was meant to be a King Tiger. A grey King Tiger.

I don't know how they got it so wrong, but this was unwatchably bad (didn't make it more than 30 minutes). Apparently i missed the 8 man GI squad infiltrating Germany and stopping their nuclear program. And a gratuitous nude scene. I regret missing the nude scene, but frankly i wasnt even prepared to skip forward for it.

On good war movies, can i express a liking for 'Malta Story' (1953, Alec Guiness, stock footage Spitfires, and tense plot that carries it all the way).

Das Boot & Downfall for sure. I also liked Full Metal Jacket very much.

You can't beat Master and Commander: the far side of the world, for some brilliant Napoleonic naval action.
Hamburger Hill is another good one
And finally Dino deLaurentis must be mentioned for the 1970 blockbuster Waterloo with Rod Stieger and Christopher Plummer.

Oddball. What a totally anachronistic character...but I love him!

'Don't hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning. Think the bridge will be there and it will be there. It's a beautiful bridge, and it's gonna be there. Ok?'
