Evening all!

Forgive the new bloke for being a bit forthright and suggesting a build theme that may have been mentioned before (although my searches turned up 0 results).

Big Cats in name only of course.

I've had a bit of think about this and I believe it could cater to a wide range of modellers and subject matter; covering aircraft (jaguar, panther, tigercat, etc), armour (tiger, leopard, lynx, etc), cars (jaguar, ummm - help me someone!) ships (well I can't think of any immediately - though I'm sure there must be).

Anyways, as I said - just a suggestion.

Cheers!
Adrian

Ships: HMS Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Tiger.

Cars: Jaguar, Panther.

There must be others.

There's the whole genre of helicopters that are deliberately named after a whole series of big cats - Puma, Lynx, Gazelle

Kind of falls over with Sea King, though...  but then that wasn't a joint venture with Aerospatiale.

Could also include figures such as Tiger Zouaves, the Airfix Tarzan set ...

As to aircraft - isn't the F-5 known as "Tiger" and thus admitted to Tiger Meets?

A Gazelle is Big Cat FOOD.

Then of course there are all those aircraft powered by Big Cats,
Napier Lions and  Armstrong Siddley's Jaguar, Tiger, Cheeta and Lynx.

Didn't Airfix do a figure of Richard the Lionheart?

The concept seems a little weak to me. I couldn't hope to join in, although if I were to do so, I'd select an HMS Tiger. You'd have to convince me how easy it would be to make a Grumman Tigercat, Panther or Cougar from anything in the Airfix range, by the way.

Just my 2c

Hmmm.....Not too much on offer for us 'Tanky-Types'; the Panther (Aiieee!   ), the Tiger (Aaargle!   ) or the Leopard (If you can actually find one!   ).

None of these are particularly promising from my own perspective as all my late war european stuff is 1/72 not 1/76 and I don't do modern AFVs at all.

All the best

I could find you a Leopard if you really wanted one.

Maybe the Tomcat is not a "Big Cat". Big cats roar, small cats meow.

I am looking for an excuse to have a go at either the Tiger 1 or Panther tank kits so sounds good to me, also have wild cats and Hell cats in the stash, not sure if they qualify as big cats though

Cheers

Stu

Stu, you don't need an excuse to have a go at those models!

The Airfix Panther, though, is very perplexing. I'm not convinced that its appearance is totally due to the angle of the torsion bars.

Things to consider are:

The hull profile. I think that the side sponsons may be too deep, and the depth should vary.
The turret profile, at the rear, looks wrong. The cupola should have an MG ring.
The Rommel boxes are missing
The tracks should be replaced by something more closely resembling Panther tracks. I think that the thickness of the tracks contribute to the inaccurate appearance more than they should.
The Drive sprocket needs some tarting-up
Check the diameter of the wheels.

I mention most of the above because I have compared my Airfix Panther to 1:76 scale drawings, and the height from the bottom of the tracks to the top of the hull is almost spot-on. Too high, if anything. This goes against the theory that the tank more closely represents one with sagged suspension (e.g. due to brewing up).
