Painting guide, I'm a bit disappointed it's not a nice shiny colour one like in the other new kits - just boring black and white......

I've made a start, most of the major assembley is done. I've found the best thing to do is to remove most of the locating pins, as these are very large (click fit?). As I thought, most of the work will be in the finesse of clearing up seam lines on the parts with stringer detail.

The main engine pods are really bad, nasty seams surrounded by stringer detail. From one of Steven's links I've seen pictures where they are covered in protective insulating material. I'm going to grab that with both hands and run with it - tamiya tape overcoated with future should do the trick.

It certainly looks impressive when assembled.  The way the sections slot together should make storage and transport a lot easier.

Pictures to follow.

Picture progress, just prior to adding milliput to the seams. It really does build up into a very impressive model.

It does break down into sections easily, and the locking mechanism is very solid when assembled.

Seams are a bit dodgy in places, I've applied tape to try to prevent losing surrounding detail in the filling process.

The rocket base plate has a sink mark and will require bit of filling around the edge.

The rockets themselvesare probably the worse bit, nasty joins and fine stringer detail. One of mine was a bit short shot. I'm basically going to sand them down a bit and cover them in tape to act as the insulation applied to the real ones. Should cover everything nicely.

I've glued one half of the new lunar module pod in place after removing the locating pins, this will allow me to glue the service module in place, but still allow the lunar module to be seen.

A bit of clean up on the lunar module is needed but the new parts look very nice. The surface texture is a little grainy though.

.

Filling and sanding next.

Nice to this build coming along Rich.

I have the old boxing, I wonder if I could get the new sprue from Airfix?

Cheers

What would we do without Tamiya tape?

Before and after on the engines, hopefully it should look OK once painted, at the moment I've sealed the tape with varnish.

As if by magic, after an application of tape the awkward seams and sink hole have vanished from the rocket plate. (I have since burnished the tape down properly).

Filling and sanding the seams on the main sections at the moment.

Enjoying your build Rich. What a pity about the size of the command module though . Still it will look ok when the boost protective cover is on.

How big is the sink mark?  Had you thought of using a correction fluid pen to drip a tiny bead of correction fluid into the sink mark?

I don't know how big the mark is, but you can get a very tiny amount of fluid out of the nib.

Covered it up with Tamiya tape, looks OK under primer. My biggest problem at the moment are the seams on the main stage - I should have removed all the tabs and re-inforced it's whole length with plastic sheet. It's cracked open in a few areas, time to go over it again, with cyano this time. Everything else is done and has primer on. Maybe some pics this afternoon.

The seams have all been treated with cyano, which has done the trick. Everything was sprayed with 2 coats of acrylic primer from a rattle can.

I've sprayed on a layer of Humbrol MetalCote aluminium;

Thermal protection on the main engines.

The command module and the interior of it's section, the lunar module has also been completed.

The interior and engine bays of the other sections.

I'll seal them all in with gloss cote and put another metalcote layer on, buff it and then seal at with another layer of gloss cote. Then I can start on the white.
