One of the reviews of the Airfix boat suggests that the stand provided detracts from the boat, and should be replaced. This is SO subjective. My personal opinion is that the Airfix stand looks great (with a little cleanup), and instantly brands the boat as an Airfix model, in common with the style of stands for other ships. Of course, that's just my opinion.

The U-Boat was the name given to Germany's Submarines.

The E-Boat is the subject of the GB. The E-Boat fired torpedoes like a Submarine, but they were fired from of the deck.

Strictly speaking, a U-boat would also have been an E-boat - the 'E' stands for Enemy. If we're being pedantic, the group build subject is actually an S-boot, or Schnell-boot.

Not sure if they only used the term E-boat for the S-boot, or whether it applied to more Kriegsmarine vessels.

Does any of that make sense, because I think I've confused myself now...

I believe the term was only used by the British for the Schnellbootes. In order not to confuse forum members, I used the term 'E-boat' for the name of the Group Build because that is what is says on the tin (well, the Airfix kit box!). However, if you look at the kit instructions, it says "German 'S' Boat". I tend to use S-boat but that is wrong too - it should be S-boot! : Whatever, I'm sure (hope) we know what we are all talking about! I think....

For those who may be interested, the German nomenclature for some of their vessels is listed below:

Aircraft Carrier - Flugzeugtrager
Battleship - Schlachtschiffe
Battlecruiser - Schalchtkreuzer
Armoured Ship - Panzerschiffe
Heavy Cruiser - Schwere Kreuzer
Light Cruiser - Leichte Kreuzer
Destroyer - Zerstorer
Torpedo Boat - Torpedoboot
Escort Vessel - Geleitboot
Fast Escort Vessel - Schnellgeleitboot
Raider Cruiser - Handels-Stor-Kreuzer
Auxiliary Cruiser - Hilfskreuzer
Sail Training Ship - Segelschulschiff
Gunnery and Mining Training Ship - Artilleriesschulschiffe und Minenschulschiffe
Minesweeper - Minensuchboot (M-boot)
Motor Launch/Motor Minesweeper - Raumboot (R-boot)

I always thought it was a little strange that they called it E-boat on the box, but S-boat on the instructions. I wonder why?

According to the Dictionary.com translator, 'boot' is German for boat, whilst 'boote' (which makes me think of little pink baby shoes

) is the plural, so both are correct.

I am sorry to say that I haven't started this one yet

Basically my modelling time (and time for pretty much all else) has been cut down to virtually nil at the moment as my departmental head at work has had to undergo an emergency operation and I have been asked to step into his shoes and hold the fort.

Hopefully the build will be left open and at some stage, perhaps over the Christmas break, I will get time to do some work (of course by that time I will also have the benefit of all the tips from the other participants

) and catch up on not only this build but also to finish the Hurricane which is very close to completion.
