ATF Charity Competition - May 2007

The first of the ATF Charity fundraisers, sponsored by ModelsForSale.com is now taking place and will run for the whole of May 2007. It is a simple one-question competition, open to ATF members only. The question has been set by Vince Brown of MFS and only he knows the answer - not even his wife knows it, and I certainly don't! As the question is a "guess the number" type of question, he is giving prizes to the person who gets the number right or is nearest and the next two nearest will also get prizes. I'm sure you will join me in thanking Vince for his donation of prizes.

First Prize - £100 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com
Second Prize - £50 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com
Third Prize - £25 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com

The goods can be chosen by the winners when they order from from ModelsForSale.com but they will have to liaise with Vince when they wish to claim their prizes. Details on just how to claim prizes will be announced at the same time as the winners are announced. Where more than one person gets the right answer or runners-up get the same answer, then they will go into a hat to be drawn by Vince to determine which one gets the higher prize.

As the whole idea of the competition is to raise money for charity, and in view of the excellent prizes provided by ModelsForSale.com, it has been decided that the entry fee will be £5 per answer.

The Question
Vince wants you to guess:
How many second-hand kits have ModelsForSale.Com sold over the past four years?
(The answer is between 10,000 and 99,999)

Paying The Entry Fee And Submitting Your Answers
You will need to visit the ATF Web Site May Competition Page for details on paying and submitting your answers. You should not contact Vince at ModelsForSale.com about the competition!

All ATF members can make payment via PayPal. UK members who wish to pay by cheque, postal order or cash should PM or email me via the Forum system for details. When you make your payment by whatever means, you must include your Forum ID and answer(s). When the payment has been received by me, you will be sent an email confirming receipt of your payment and your answer(s).

The Results
At the end of May, I will collate the answers and forward them on to Vince. He will then inform me of the three lucky winners in the first week of June and I will make an announcement in the Charity Fundraising 2007 Forum the same day along with details on how winners may claim their prizes.

If you have any questions or comments, then please post them in this thread but do not post your answers here! If you have any problems making payment via the web site, then PM or email me.

Finally, good luck!!

I've got my guesses in, so now there's no excuses

For those of you who can't decide, I found this which guessed my answers for me!:

Seventh day of the competition today and only five people have entered so far. This competition, which has three great prizes, only runs for another three and a half weeks. So, come on everybody, help support our nominated charities!

Dave
Spudgun

Don't panic. I've got my numbers ready. However, I'm waiting for a couple of Direct Debits to clear so I know how much I've got left to play with.
davecov

No probs, just the first of a few reminders going out.....

Glad to know you will be entering, Spudgun!

Dave
farmroad38

Me too - just waiting for a transfer into my Paypal account, so there won't be any Paypal charges.
Spudgun

I've now entered! Quake at the awsomeness of my answers! (or not as the case may be).
davecov

And they were gratefully received!

BTW, proceeds from donations and competition fees have reached £109.85 as of tonight.

Dave
davecov

Just over two weeks left, so don't forget to get your entries in now....

Funds raised so far from donations and quiz entry fees (as of 1030 today): £128.94

Dave
Owen

farmroad38

Well, my Paypal transfer finally went through (why on earth does it take so long?), so I've entered.
davecov

Thanks Adrian. Your guesses have been recorded. Good luck!

Dave

The amount of money raised from donations and competition entries now stands at: £167.66.

We have only had 10 people take part so far in the competition (with a postal entry on the way too), out of a forum membership which is now approaching 500 members. A bit of a disappointing turnout so far with only 10 days left before the competition closes.

A reminder of the prizes:

First Prize - £100 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com
Second Prize - £50 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com
Third Prize - £25 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com

All of the goods can be chosen by the winners so you will not be lumbered with anything you don't want. As well as the great prizes that you can win by paying £5 entry fee per answer, you will, more importantly, be contributing towards the ATF fundraising which is raising monies for our four chosen charities:

An International Charity (WWF)
A UK children's charity (Great Ormond Street Hospital)
A UK non-children's charity (Cancer Research UK)
Any Non-UK charity (Médecins Sans Frontières)

So, get your entries in. After all, a fiver won't break the bank. Just put off buying that kit or handful of paints for a couple of weeks. I've had a few goes myself and I'm sure you would hate it if I was to win something! To lessen the chances of my winning we must have more entries!

Dave
BAC

I've just done a couple of answers!
Richard M

Just a few more days till payday then I'll have a few goes
Rich
davecov

Thanks Brian, I have received your entries.

Rich, I look forward to getting some dosh out of you, too! Just be sure to get your entries in before midnight on 31st May (BST)!

Dave
davecov

We are now down to the final week of the May competition, so don't forget to get your entries in before midnight (BST) next Thursday, 31st May. My nagging for entries (for which I do not apologise) will then stop!

We have now had 13 people take part so far in the competition (with a postal entry on the way too), raising £177.27 net. With donations of £28.43 as well, the total raised for our chosen charities now stands at £205.70

Dave
Ratch

I should give up now chaps, I've just entered the winning total
Spudgun

Pffffft. You'll just have to settle for the 2nd prize. 1st prize is mine!
davecov

We have had 14 people take part in the competition so far (with a postal entry promised too). This has raised £201.02 net. Along with donations of £28.43, the total raised for our chosen charities now stands at £229.45

As there are only five days left you haven't got long in which to get your entries in. If you want to send a postal entry, then you really need to have posted it by now or as a last resort get it sent by first post on Tuesday 29th May. Postal entries received after 31st May will not be eligible for entry into the competition.

Dave
davecov

Just a reminder that this is the last day to get your postal entries sent off for the May charity fundraiser competition. For those wishing to enter online, you have until midnight (BST) on Thursday 31st May.

Dave
davecov

Just about 27.5 hours left for you to get your entries in for the ATF May Fundraiser Competition which closes midnight (BST) tomorrow, Thursday 31st May. I can only accept entries via PayPal now and any entries that arrive by post tomorrow.

We have had 15 people take part in the competition now. This has raised £206.02 net so far. Along with donations of £28.43, the total raised for our chosen charities now stands at £234.45

Dave
davecov

THIS IS IT!!! LAST DAY TO ENTER THE COMPETITION!!!

15 people have taken the trouble to enter so far but there is still plenty of time for the rest of you to get your entries in today, especially those who voted for or nominated charities but haven't yet entered.

Entries for the competition cannot be taken after midnight BST today, Thursday 31st May.

Dave
davecov

The postman has just been and no postal entries for the competition were delivered. So, if you sent a postal entry and haven't received an email acknowledging receipt of it, then you are too late I'm afraid. Sorry.

Dave
davecov

The competition has now closed and I would like to thank to the 15 other people besides myself who took part. Between us we raised an amazing £235.48 for our chosen charities!

The entries will be forwarded to Vince of ModelsForSale.com for him to declare the winner and two runners-up. They will be announced on this forum within the next few days.

Dave
Ratch

Well done Dave, a tidy sum
davecov

Right, it is now time to reveal the winner and runners-up of the ATF May Charity Fundraiser Competition. You will remember that the question was set by Vince of ModelsForSale.com and he wanted to know:

How many second-hand kits have ModelsForSale.com sold over the past four years?

and the answer is: 32438

The winner was Spudgun with the nearest answer of 32503

Second place was Stuzzar with the second nearest answer of 32000

Third place was Puttyfinger with the third nearest answer of 31622

Congratulations to you all. Your prizes, donated by ModelsForSale.com, were:

First Prize - £100 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com
Second Prize - £50 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com
Third Prize - £25 worth of goods from ModelsForSale.com.

I will forward your names and email addresses to Vince.

BTW, Puttyfinger's answer was from his single postal entry and not one of the ATF Quiz prizes.

A big thank you to all of you who entered the competition and helped raise money for charity (£235.48). For those of you who did not win this time round, watch out for the next fundraiser that will be announced at the end of July or early August.

Dave
Spudgun

Oh lordy. I'll be back in a bit when I've composed myself.
puttyfinger

I still haven't recovered from winning two of Spudgun's entries. Lucky I'm no good at emoticons or this reply would be full of them!!!!!!

For anyone who's interested (or maybe just to rub it in????), there's a piece of mathematics behind my successful answer - it's the geometric mean of the given upper and lower limits: multiply the two of them together and take the square root. Isn't maths wonderful? (Sniffle, best Gwyneth Paltrow impression....)

I used a similar formulae myself Always knew the maths 'O' level would come in handy

Congratulations to Spudgun and Puttyfinger

Cheers

Well, I've had a bit of time to compose myself and suffice to say, I'm like a dog with two tails! All of those kits at MFS and I haven't a clue what to get. I think I'll wait a while.

A big thanks to all involved in this competition. That includes the organisers and entrants. It's a bit of a pity that one of the ATF Quiz prize numbers didn't get a prize, but at least one of the joint winners got something.

As for the selection of the numbers that I had (this includes the numbers that were the prizes for the May ATF Quiz), I simply used a random number generator (my maths is hopeless).

Congrats to Stuzzar and Puttyfinger. It looks like our respective stashes are about to get a bit bigger!
Radio Gnome

Well done you three, time for a shopping spree

Can't remember my numbers but I think I had one in the 30,000's somewhere so at least I was close!

Nice job by Dave as ever organising it and a BIG thanks to Vince for donating such a generous prize.

Maybe I'll be luckier for the rest of the fundraisers!
davecov

Hi Paul,

There were a few in the 30,000s. Your number was 36250, Ratch had 34669, I had 37239, Adrian had 37813 and Brian had 33400.

Dave
feanor

Ayup All...

To the victors the spoils, congratulations..

What we didn't know was that OWEN bought: 32436 of them! my two were a Lifeboat and Tornado, and i only JUST pipped him to those !! ROTFL ROTFL
Owen

Well Done Lads! Enjoy!

And a pat on the back to everyone else who took part, £235 is a lot from 15 people!

BTW, how far away was I with my two entries? I can't remember what I said!
puttyfinger

Like Spudgun I've only just recovered from the shock! Congrats to him (and for his excellent SF comp) and Stuzzar, thanks to Dave, and Vince at ModelsFor Sale.

Spudgun used a random number? I was wrong, maths really IS bunk!
Ratch

Well done chaps and thanks Vince for sponsoring the prizes
My first guess was the nearest, after that they just got worse
farmroad38

Well done chaps - good job I didn't win, otherwise my other half would have thrown me out!

I have to say my guesses were exactly that - finger in the air jobs! Maybe I should have been more scientific

Hi Owen, you wasn't so much far away as in a different solar system with your guesses of 15624 & 73485. Never mind, at least you took part!

Dave
grahameo

Well Done Everyone.

I,ve forgotten what my answer was,but who cares it was for a good cause.

Grahameo
davecov

I dunno, all these people who forgot their answers!

Your answer was 47500, Graham.

Dave

Cograts folks
1truegod

Well done to the winners
A thank you for Dave for organizing this event and MFS for the kind donations

BTW: wouldn't it be an idea to put everyones name and number in a table starting with the winner at the top and then the numbers going down to see how people did, that way it gives Dave a break from telling everyones number
davecov

Well, Nathan, there are three reasons:

Firstly, everyone got an email confirming their numbers and were asked to retain them as a receipt so they shouldn't need to ask.

Secondly, some people do not want to divulge how many answers they gave as it would also divulge how much they spent.

Third, I won't be answering any more queries about numbers.....

Dave
Spudgun

Just to let everyone know, I've just redeemed my prize at MFS. Here's what I bought.

Testors - Visible Racing Hemi Engine Scale: 1/4
I built the Revell visible engine 25 years ago, so I fancied a crack at another one. I've also got the Airfix 4 Stroke Engine in the stash to keep it company.
Airfix - Classic Cars - Escort - Viva - Herald Scale: 1/32
Just had to have some Airfix kits.
Classic Airframes - Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I Day Fighter Scale: 1/48
I've heard that these are the biz. I also had a couple of paint brushes as well.

Once again, many thanks to MFS for donating the prizes. I hope that MFS doesn't mind to much, but this prize has really racked up my loyality discount bonus!
Ratch

Right then Spudgun, crack on now, let's see 'em built
Radio Gnome

Good choice Spud

I have the C A Boulton Paul in the stash as well. Mine is the earlier version with the all black "shark mouth" aircraft on the box. If you have the later version its even better as I understand they corrected a the inaccuracies of the fuselage.

This is near the top of my "to build" list

Nice choice of models Spud
