Confessions of an ex-modeller...

Hi all... been lurking around here recently and thought I'd might as well register. I feel I should introduce myself... I (mis)spent a lot of my childhood in the 70s poring over Airfix catalogues (some of my earliest reading material) and Airfix magazines (from the age of 10) and building (or at least starting) 40-odd kits; mainly Airfix and mainly aircraft, but also a few military vehicles, ships, spacecraft, the Black Prince, a triceratops, a pair of bluetits, a BSA C15, a Volkswagen K70 and an engine shed! I even started compiling a huge list of model subjects, with notes on kit choices, colour schemes and references. Needless to say, I only ever actually made a tiny fraction of the list! I ended up with a bad dose of Advanced Modeller Syndrome (and a stash of around 30 unmade kits) which led to me losing interest in the mid-80s.

Then one day a while ago I checked out the Airfix website for some reason, and lo! they were promising a new 1:72 TSR-2 kit! The holy grail of British post-war military aircraft modelling! This revived my latent enthusiasm for modelmaking, so I started looking at various modelmaking websites to see how the hobby had changed since the 80s. Surprisingly little: Some old Matchbox kits were now in Revell boxes and acrylics were a lot more popular, but there were still a lot of dodgy old kits from the 60s in production! In fact some things had changed for the worse: Humbrol Authentics were no more.

I dug out my stash and flogged most of them off on eBay. I reckoned if I did find the time to take up the hobby again I'd try to avoid AMS by keeping my ambitions low and sticking to a narrow theme of 1:72 British fast jets (with maybe a sideline in post-war trainers): this would involve reasonably small models, a minimum of fiddly detailing, and a good range of not-too-challenging kits to choose from. So I kept the Hasegawa Lightning, the Heller Vampire and the Matchbox Provost, and managed to get my hands on one of those TSR-2s (and yes it's still shrinkwrapped in case I change my mind ).

So far, I haven't actually got round to dipping my toe back in the water yet, but I have recently become quite interested in the re-released Airfix 1:32 car kits as I've become a bit of a petrolhead in the intervening years. So, if and when I get my hands on the 2006 Classic Car Collection set...

PS. Does anyone still use a Humbrol Studio 1 airbrush? I have one in pristine condition - a Christmas present from 20-odd years ago I never got round to using!
